Alright, I remember when potions were originally being added, Jeb said that he was thinking of the possibility of adding over 16000 potions. This might require new brewing ingredients. My ideas regarding new ingredients?
Shell powder: finally a way to make the oceans more interesting! Colored shells underwater, that when destroyed, drop shell powder and maybe some dyes.
Salt: on beaches, sometimes there are some white specs. When broken, salt is dropped.
Wheat
Lapis
Bottle of Enchanting (yes, that's right.)
Here I have some ideas for new potions (however, I know some are already planned, I'm just suggesting some slightly alternate effects, along with effects on other mobs.) :
Potion of Stupidity:
This is a yellow potion brewed from wheat and a mundane potion. When used, this potion blurs the player's screen, and slowly deals health. It also can cause the player to lose control of their actions-possibly making the player even harm their pets (dogs, cats), uncontrollably move toward hostile mobs (hey mr. creeper, you look like you could use a hug!) and even change the textures of some blocks (hey! my house is made from diamonds! or hey! I just found coal! [really diamonds] I don't want to wear out my iron pick so I'll use my stone one!). The stronger the potion (the more glowstone in the mix) the more health you lose, the blurier the screen, the more halucinations you have, and the less control over your actions you have. The effects on mobs? They move in odd patterns and hostile mobs that are affected are more likely to attack other hostile mobs (and sometimes passive mobs as well) than you.
Potion of Genius:
This is a blue potion that is brewed from an awkward potion, a ghast tear, bottle of enchanting, and lapis (Finally a good use for it!). This potion, when used on the player, creates faint highlights where ores MIGHT be. Sometimes it might just be highlighting a bunch of gravel underground or something. Other times, it might be actually highlighting ores you want. (Diamonds!) TNT is always highlighted, so if you see a pressure plate with a highlighted block beneath it, watch out! Also, when you are using a bow, a little red dot appears over mobs. If you align the crosshairs with that red dot, it is very likely that you will hit the mob! The more glowstone, the more likely rare ores will be highlighted and the more likely the red dot when you are using the bow will be in just the right spot to hit the mob. But, when used on mobs, they have an even better pathfinding ability. They can find you better, they can see you from farther away and through walls (the skeleton is using hacks!), plus, the mobs can then open doors, press buttons, hit switches, etc. Awesome potion, but if it falls into the wrong hands (wait, creepers don't have hands!), you're doomed.
Potion of Sight:
This is a white potion that is very useful, especially at night, in dark caves, and in multiplayer. This potion is brewed with an awkward potion, a ghast tear, and a bottle of enchanting. When a player uses it, the area becomes bright as day, but luckily, just to the players who are affected. (I see you, but you don't see me.) It also makes it easier to see player tags in multiplayer, disregarding if they are sneaking as long as they are within 10 blocks, give or take a few blocks depending on how much glowstone/redstone you put in. (how did you find me?) When used on mobs, they can see you from farther away and through walls.
Potion of Blindness:
This black potion is brewed similarly to the potion of sight, but instead with a fermented spider eye in the mix. This blurs the screen and makes it impossible to see player tags. When used on mobs, their range of sight decreases. (Hah mr. skeleton! You can't shoot at me now! You can't see me from there!) When mixed with redstone or glowstone, it changes the sight range for mobs and how blurry the player's screen is.
Potion of Flammability:
This is a rather funny potion, as long as it isn't being used on you. Brewed with an awkward potion and shell powder, this red-orange potion can cause you to start on fire quite easily. If there's too much glowstone in the mix, you can even burst into flames when you step out into the sunlight! (AHH! THE SUN! IT BURNS!) Basically, it makes you more likely to start on fire, and increases the damage you get from fire. Fire and lava deal you twice as much damage, and when you are in the nether or a desert, it's quite likely you'll start on fire. And like I said, if there's too much glowstone in the mix, you can burst into flames just by stepping into the sunlight. Glowstone also makes it likely that the same will happen if you get too close to lava or fire. How will this effect mobs? Well, blazes become more powerfull, but other than that, hostile mobs instantly burst into flames in light levels above 4, but otherwise will get the same effects as you when in a desert, the nether, or near fire or lava.
Potion of Water Breathing:
This is a good potion to get if you want to get shell powder to make a potion of flammability. It allows you to breathe underwater. (Now its easier to look for Atlantis!) Made from a mundane potion, and salt, this pale blue potion is quite useful to see underwater, and the more redstone in it, the longer you can stay under, but if you put glowstone in it, it adds a primitive thirst element to the game: until the potion wears off, you need water to live! (air! air! cant... breathe... air!) You take massive damage until either the potion wears off or you get something to drink, ie. water bottle, potion, milk. The more glowstone, the more damage you take and the more water you need to stop it. Use it on mobs and you can prevent them from drowning, make them resistant to water if they're an enderman, or just watch them die from thirst!
Potion of Invincibility:
This is one of the best potions, especially on hardcore. This lime-green potion makes you invincible! (Cue Star power music from Mario!) Unfortunately, this potion can only be obtained through trading with villagers. (Just another reason not to kill them.) It unfortunately also has the power to make your day the worst ever when you accidentally make it into a splash potion and decide to throw it at a hostile mob (hey! maybe I can keep a creeper from exploding with this....). This makes the mob indestructible for about a minute, as this potion cannot be mixed with redstone or glowstone to change the effect to keep it from becoming too overpowered. (I can't make it last longer? I want my emeralds back!) And the worst thing of all? Creepers with the invincibility effect don't die when they explode, they just keep following you and destroying everything in their path. Like I said, luckily the effect lasts only a minute and this cannot be changed with redstone/glowstone.
Potion of Death:
This dark violet potion is good if you want to get out of somewhere fast, or if you want to kill a mob or player the quick and easy way-just stand back. Like the potion of Invincibility, this potion can only be obtained through trading with villagers. This potion basically kills anything that it effects. A sip of this and you'll die instantly. Standing within range of where the splash potion version spreads to, even at the edge of the range, it'll kill you disregarding your armor. If you are using the potion of invincibility however, the effect of it wears off immediately. This is good for killing mobs or players, or sometimes getting out of pit traps, just as long as you take the proper precautions.
Suggested Potions:
(suggested by The_Waza_Man) Potion of Acid:
Effects on player: deals massive damage to armor, but none to health. If you drink it, you die.
Stupidity and flammable are cool. Water breathing, blindness and sight are going to be added eventually anyways.
I know that those three would be added, I'm just adding them to my list to suggest ways that they could work. Just giving their names doesn't give all the information.
Whenever I see one of these things I think
"OH MAH GAWD JEB WHY DID YOU USE BREWING STANDS INSTEAD OF CAULDRONS"
"WHYYYYYYYYYYYY"
And consider bumping my thread about dumping brewing stands because they were completely inferior to cauldrons.
I like Stupidity (might be hard to code) and Flammability. As Voyager said, Water Breathing, Blindness, and Sight are going to be added when Jeb decides to add the potion effects that were included in the alternative to Brewing Stands (JEB Y U NO KEEP CAULDRONS).
I've had personal experience with Water Breathing and both sight-based potions when they were in the game. Water Breathing worked (duh), Blindness reduced vision to that of void-level and jacked down the render distance, and Sight (Night Vision) was broken and did nothing.
Love the idea, except for the potion of death. WAY too op. What if someone makes a hole stack of these on a SMP server? May I suggest a new potion? Potion of Acid. Does no damage when thrown, buts does extreme damage to the armour, also when drunk you die.

I'm not sure you read the entire thing. You can only get it and the potion of invincibility from trading with villagers.
Also, creepernation, a bottle of enchanting is an item that looks like an odd, glowing potion, is thrown like a splash potion, but, in survival mode, can only be obtained by trading with villagers. When thrown, it releases xp orbs.
