Enchanting was added as motivation for players to stay alive, making the survival aspect a lot more urgent.
My problem with enchanting is that the randomness of the enchantments doesn't reward you well for staying alive, and after you finish enchanting an item you no longer have all those levels you need to protect.
My suggestion is instead of enchanting the items, you enchant yourself. That means you can't just store the items away then go commit suicide to get your health back, or whatever. After enchanting, you'll hold your live to a much greater value, making the survival aspect a lot more intense.
Of course, you would then lose the degrading on the enchanted items, which would mean you could just spam whatever powers you just got, which is a problem. The solution to that would be to add a mana bar. A very basic one. I think this would be a LOT more fun than enchanting in it's current state.
Please, don't shoot this idea down right away.

i thought about it and i hate it.. im sorry... enchanting is an upgrade to wepons and tools..not just a reason to stay alive..if you want you can use low enchantments or save for more... this way i could keep "enchanting" myself getting a few lvls then enchant and repeat and stack myself with insane enchants...i could ever possibly have fourtune 1 .. 2..3... and so on...protection 1-5 ya now i never can die i take no damage.. you would have to change EVERYTHING about enchanting... and then when it comes to "mana" how would it work..would you have to activate each enchant whe you wanna use it? would there be a duration? would mana regen...what if you wanna use more than one enchant at a time? how many buttons are being linked now to use each thing? will i have to hit like 4 buttons to enchant myself to mine now? if you die do you lose everything? if so imagine enchanting yourself to do super mining then ooops didnt see that creeper.. lost it all right there.. would you have to enchant yourself for each tool or would it be universal now? same for armour..?>

Not that I don't like the idea, I just don't think it does it's job. I mean, I've reverted back to the old ways of just jumping off of high buildings when I get low on health, because I simply don't think enchanting is worth the trouble. I'll have to either waste time at a mob-trap or work tirelessly killing mobs myself just to be given a terrible enchantment.
I haven't thought about how the machanics would work, though it would work completely different than it does now.

Enchanting isn't random but you can't mindlessly click and expect to get something good.

Erm, you're mistaken, actually. Of course there are set enchanments that you can get, but you aren't able to pick which one you want. Even translating is useless as what you translate has no relation to what the enchantment actually does.

I'll have to either waste time at a mob-trap or work tirelessly killing mobs myself just to be given a terrible enchantment.

Except postions are just short boosts. They add nothing to the survival aspect, which is something Minecraft NEEDS.
ok so your making a sugestion to change somthing completly but you have no idea how or what you would do..no idea what enchantments would be or how they would work...ya its looking even worse for you on this.. and why kill yourself when heath is low...it kinda regens... and you want serviaval...try hardcore..you die its done...problem solved... enchanting is fine..maybe a few lil tweeks to it but other than that no need to change the whole thing... enchanting is item upgraging...plus the brewin/potion thing would trump your "self enchanting" in my books...
A better idea, in my opinion at least, would be allowing the player to pick what enchantments they want on their items rather than the enchantment being picked at random. And while Mojang's at it, they should modify the item repairing function to something more practical than "combining two of the same item on an enchanting grid and losing the enchantment on any items repaired". Players work hard to get those enchantments. The message the enchantment function currently gives off is "What you get is what you got. Enjoy it while it lasts." when it should be "Pick whatever you want, but take good care of it."
