So the new snapshot came out: 12w21a, and although I never tried it out myself (I don't want to spoil it trying it out beforehand) I watched a couple videos about it, and I think the trading system's really cool.
But the only thing I didn't like are the emeralds.
IRL, emeralds are pretty valuable and you wouldn't, say, sell 4 Diamondsfor a single emerald (even though emeralds are valuable, it's not as valuable as ), nor would you trade 19 stalks of wheat with a valuable green gem.
And emeralds aren't too fitting to minecraft; it reminds me too much of rupees in Zelda.
So what if instead of emeralds we had gold coins?
Gold coins would make much more sense as a currency item than emeralds.
This is my idea for the Gold Coin: (yields 2)
This would actually put a use to collecting gold while adventuring in a cave (other than to make a huge roller coaster minecart system in your world)
The Gold Coins would be used for trading with villagers.
well jeb stated that trading is currently much more in favor of the player so expect prices to get jacked up. You have to realise that the Testificates are being realistic; outside of trading emeralds are useless
I doubt people living thousands of years ago used emeralds as currency (hurr durr ill trade u 5 pieces of piggymeat for an emerald idk) so I just thought a gold coin was more logical.

Minecraft isn't set in any specific time period or setting, so I don't quite understand where you got the "thousands of years ago" from. The villagers in Minecraft seem to have various kinds of advancement and simplicity; I think with a civilization such as that both Emeralds and Gold would be reasonable currencies. However, while this is only a snapshot, I really doubt they're going to be changing the currency (You can trade items to villagers to get emeralds, so it wouldn't be too hard to sell gold to a villager to get emeralds, then buy things with the emeralds).

"Victory is like a watermelon. It's hard to spell and it tastes good."
Personally, I hate the new Emerald Ore, it should just be gold coins like in this thread, four gold needed to make 16 gold coins, which are used for trading. I'm not a fan of one use items, discounting decorations, Flint & Steel and Redstone. I'd say it is a good idea, but one that does tend to come up, though not as often as Crazy1duke1 stated.
I kind of agree that emeralds in themselves don't feel like the best currency item. Although the point, I think, is that they're rare and that there isn't any other use for them, so they can't fluctuate in value the way gold and diamonds, which can be made into tools, fluctuate.

I don't think bringing in real world values will get us very far. At certain times and places, IRL emeralds could indeed be more valuable than diamonds. IRL diamonds are artificially expensive because of De Beers.
And emeralds aren't too fitting to minecraft; it reminds me too much of rupees in Zelda.
Are you trying to convince me that emeralds are good or bad? Because frankly an homage to the Legend of Zelda makes me warm up to the idea of emeralds.

Nice try, but I don't want that either. What I personally want is a very intricate and robust barter system. I've seen it done on servers before. Basically every item has a ratio with every other item which it can then be traded for. And then certain ratios can fluctuate depending on the mood of the NPC you're talking to.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
Gold is a renewable resource. Until selling items is put in, if it's put in (it probably will, for logic's sake) Emeralds are not renewable (even if/when selling is implemented, selling items to make them "renewable" isn't exactly true; you're giving up something to get them, it's not like you're getting free emeralds)
Gold is still valuable, despite being renewable. Personally I'd rather use my gold in rails than as currency. It's a cheaper recipe than what was suggested, and you get more use out of it.
This is Minecraft. There is no time period, and real life has little effect on the game. They could be called "green chips" for all anyone has to care, "emeralds" simply sound better than "green chips"
I'd probably have to agree with The_Dizzie; the name could simply be changed. I bet that if they weren't called "emeralds" you wouldn't have even posted this thread; the only thing people dislike is the fact that they associate "emeralds" with "jewelry" and "coins" with "trading", it's not really anything other than ideas shoved down our throats by jewelry makers that "jewels aren't meant to be used in trades, this is".
Edit: Because it's going to bug me, apparently selling is in the game, but only specific villagers can do it.

Any thoughts?

What's up? I'm the proud co-owner of a little ClassiCube server called Minebuild.

Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.
