Ok so I just tried out the new snapshot, and I think it's very cool. But the thing that annoys me is emeralds are rarer then diamonds (gasp, I know right) something like x% and what not. So I think that there should be more uses for emeralds, like swords, picks, armor, ect. Also I think we should get more emeralds per ore.
One guy dug up all of a village's wheat and sold it for 6 emeralds. If it gets used as tools it should just bridge the (minor) gap between stone and iron. If there was an even rarer currency item that could be used for tools (say, 10 emeralds=1 of these) perhaps it could bridge the gap between iron and diamond.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

I see your point but I still find it annoying that emeralds are more rare then diamonds
It's only the snapshot so they can easily fix the rate of it spawning. I know what you mean, but the emerald was implemented for trading and nothing else, so i think they might keep it that way as it's not even in the game yet

It's not rare when potentially a stack of wheat that can be gotten from the surrounding can turn in to a sword/pick stronger than something much harder to get.

Same as above, I think emeralds were made for trading. Since they are rarer than diamonds currently, the only way to balance it would be to make it stronger than diamond, which is just wrong. I can only envision emeralds as being something for ultra expensive "legendary" items or something, (there's lots if hreads for magic staves and such) because every other way to get these kind of things is too cheap.

You better watch closely, or these words just might turn into a juggling squirrel...

Thank you. That well illustrates the reason for not making tools out of them.
I would say that, if anything, they should be used to make decorative blocks...although, at that point I would prefer if they were Jade instead of Emerald.
