well done i too think that minecraft should be about sight seeing instead of just survival or creating like in real life. although i disagree about the ravines and the abandoned mine shafts they need to stay exactly how they are. tssssssss BOOOOOM!!!!!!!
I liked 1.7 (I do agree with you, though, it could have been more realistic). The only thing I really hate about the new terrain engine is the fact that there are no mountain ranges, just single, monolithic mountains hacked apart by ravines, hence creating an area not suited to anything at all, besides demolition.
I agree with most of this, except that I don't think oceans are too big. While oceans need more diverse terrain and biomes on islands (and island sizes), and should definitely have underwater content beyond the current clay, sand, dirt, and an ocasional hole in the bottom, I have never seen an ocean 50k blocks wide as you say you have. The biggest I've seen was something like 25k, but that was just going in one direction, and have never seen more than a few of them (within 40k blocks from spawn) usually at least 5-10k blocks away from spawn per seed. Also if you were to see the your entire map seed on a big map, you would most likely find that oceans that size are almost always much thinner along a perpendicular axis.
ID LOVE THIS! im fine with ravines and caves from 1.8+ but the surface terrain is terrible, which is why id love it reverted back to 1.7 terrain, beaches are paradise, but overall the 1.7 terrain is much better than 1.8+ terrain
The underground generation is terrible. Caves are always seemingly infinite.
No. The good thing is when you can find swiss-cheese, you can find cave-free areas, endless caves, medium caves, short caves etc. Now we have ONLY swiss-cheese and endless caves.

I support this idea partly.
I do agree that all biomes should have hills, (Not just Extreme Hills) except plains biomes, though as plains are supposed to be flat.
I also think that the oceans are supposed to be smaller (by half maybe?), but I also suggest that very small lake like oceans won't spawn in the middle of the jungle.
And I think that caves should be smaller, too.
I would also like to say that not all people dislike the current generation. Maybe added as a optional feature in the "World Options"?
Being a player since the first days of Alpha, I've grown a bit nostalgic for the old days, running a mediocre peaceful server and exploring with my friends. I often find myself missing many aspects of those "glory days", but none moreso than the terrain.
In my first world ever, I spent much of my time exploring the world, making torch trails all about leading to the amazing, different cave systems I'd find - often later discovering them to be connected to each-other over massive distances. Something that I've not experienced since those days. Caves used to truly be caves. Long, underground tubes connecting to entrances over great distances, along with a sporadic cave here or there that would dead end. Mining wasn't my focus or goal. Building wasn't either. Exploration was, and I feel today, that sense of mystery is gone. The "I wonder what's behind that hill" feeling is gone.
Surface terrain, in my opinion, was at it's peak back then as well. Alpha terrain, if I recall, was much like Beta, but the mountains were more spread out, and far less impossible. I've gone back to Alpha jarfiles a few times just to sight-see. We didn't used to need a beach biome. Beaches happened on their own. Mountains happened on their own. Biomes were the beginning of the dramatic decline in quality towards what we have now. Sure, they add some variety, but variety stops feeling like variety when you feel like every swamp you see is the same. Every jungle. The variety lacks variety.
I don't want to sound rude, or insult anyone - but I feel sorry for the newer players that never got to see how things used to be.

Actually I did witness 50,000 blocks of ocean and it was probably further than that. After 50,000 blocks I gave up. They are actually very very big. Even 25,000 blocks.. imagine crossing that in a survival game even with a boat. That's just ungodly how long that'd take. The islands in the oceans should be much bigger and much more common. Oceans should have 1000 blocks at the MOST in between at least 2 decent sized islands. Right now it's ridiculous the amount of water you have to cross before you finally hit land.
Shreaders, I disagree with you on this one. I think having seemingly endless caves is a wonderful thing. The only bad thing is that that is the ONLY type of cave we see.
I thought you thought the same way - maybe you just misinterpreted his statement.
Agree with everything in the op. Hate the current land gen and damn caves (and mineshafts should be reduced, for they too snake off in too many directions). Caves used to be a 'side quest' while you were mining, now, mining is a side quest while you explore caves. CaveCraft...
Oh yes, and the endless oceans are dread. When you're on a a server that's all used up, once you hit that ocean a few thousand blocks from spawn, that's it...
Sigh... Mojang thinks that terrain sliders will fix this. It would be like adding one of those mods like better world gen 3 to minecraft, with all those new world types and options, which just annoys me.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.

What? That last part makes no sense.

Having them around is a good thing. Them being the only type of cave you see is the bad thing.
