Once mod API is out they really have no excuse not to fix bugs, balance features that need balancing, polish the game, and fix the damn generation!!!!!
I approve of this thread. There are some stupid biomes, and I'm gonna say this. I don't like the colored planks. This thread was wrote well, and actually really speaks the truth. I support. I don't like the jungles, and the seeds of today are a bit...stupid. All I see is "HEY LOOK I SPAWNED IN AN NPC VILLAGE CHECK THIS OUT" and "OMG I FOUND A CAVE WITH 4 DIAMONDS CHECK THIS SEED OUT". It's sad. What else is there to do? I'd like it if seeds actually started you in a biome you wanted to start in. Example: Typing in forest in the generator, will start you in a forest. I think you get the idea. And when I spawn in a biome I don't like, I get sad because I have to create a new world. But seriously, way too many oceans, too many caves, and way too many jungles.
The new world generating system is stupid, and pretty much offers nothing else to do other then to wander around checking out this NPC villages. Or you have to walk through this 1000 block jungle just to get to a biome you like. tl;dr, the new world generation system is stupid, and Minecraft's recent updates have sort of been making the game worse in my opinion.
Not necessarily. Seeds are meant to be random, and the unexpectedness of each world is what Minecraft is all about. Anyways, there are millions of seeds that will start you out in a forest of preferable size.

If you enter a non-digit string, Minecraft uses hash() on it, converting it to a long int number. For example, I got 4053864649232. What biome should it spawn me in?

Hello terrain thread. Some people and I are trying to get some letters mailed into the Mojang office about this issue since they continue to ignore it. Some help is wanted!!!
i have got quite sick and tired of terrain complaints making flame wars and a wall of text that in no way provides any evidence of said terrain problems, and simply made me think that people who say they want new terrain were just trolling/flaming/complaining needlessly.
however, you good sir/maddam have made me remember something i had forgot about the old terrain generation. it WAS nice. it DID make me want to explore more. it DID provide better looking/more diverse biomes.
.. it could be simply because every other thread ive seen on the matter was not well worded, and seemed more like a personal attack on mojang. this one isnt. your OP just suggests improvement whilst not flaming, therefore, i shall click that little button in the bottom-right hand corner of your post which i have just figured out is how to '+1' someone lol.
i agree with you on this, especially one main point i saw on the first page (lol, i stopped after reading the first page, because i have been going through countless hours reading soooo many pages on threads.. and i got the point after reading the original post) that said something about ore distribution being somewhat broken most likely due to the newer terrain generation.
i would have to agree.. i just started a new hardcore save file looking for a challenge, but instead what i got was a 'go to this ravine right here and automatically have a full set of iron armor and tools' type of experience
in conclusion, i would absolutely love the terrain generation go back to as i vaguely remember it being once. or perhaps expanding the diversity of the landscape even more than previously.
That's true. But as I said I don't believe there will be any terrain changes in near future because they are working on the mod API, the rendering engine, the lightning engine and the sound engine. Also they are shoveling their way through all the bugs reported at the new bug tracker.
API was expected to be in 1.3, then in 1.4.

He has a point though. We've already discussed the fact that they should be working one multiple aspects of the game simultaneously. He's also correct in the fact that people should stop spamming mojang's inbox with the "jeb u suck" nonsense and provide constructive criticism rather than whiney complaints.
If Mojang has more important things to do than satisfy the wants of their player base; their company isn't going to make it very far. Hell, even the most annoying complaints should be given at least the slightest bit of attention - what happened to the customer's always right? As a company it is their job to satisfy the players.
I feel like I say this every 5 minutes but if Mojang, and with Mojang I mean 2 average coders, had the opportunity to just make a completely new terrain generator and to release it instantly, they would simply do that. They don't just sit in front of their desk and think "Know what, Jens? I think we should overhaul the complete terrain now. Nargh, screw it. Let's go to Disneyland and tomorrow we add a new block." It's more like "Know what, Jens? Minecraft is pretty slow at the moment. I will work on the lightning engine and you can give the players new features. Terrain changes? Okay, how we gonna start *pulls out a giant blackboard full of ideas and complains* So, I think I may have some time to reduce cave and jungle desity." At least that's how I suppose how they are working. As someone who knows almost nothing about coding I know that improving the actual playability by making the game faster and smoother is much more important than changing the game elements. But there's a difference between adding a new terrain and adding a new building material. They can add a simple material while being busy with 4 different major projects at the same time, that doesn't work with such big things as the terrain. As mentioned further above I would propose to hire some new, Jon-like coders for terrain only since jeb_ and Dinnerbone won't accomplish any major things as long as their are working on all the other stuff.
I feel as if it is not as complicated as it seems. Hell, even Exalm made a refurbished generator in less than a week! How far can us complainers go? We've not only complained, but we've provided evidence, constructive criticism, and suggestions on how to improve if you're not counting the terrain generator somebody else made as a prototype. Mojang does this one particular thing that shouldn't be happening. I hate it, and I mean HATE it when they work on multiple aspects of the game at one time. Not only does it kill off any chances of issues being completely handled, it introduces even more issues because they half-implement every idea they have (due to working on so many things at once).

I agree, but it's still a bit depressing that we don't even get a half-implemented attempt at any kind of improvements to the terrain. We get jack squat from Mojang but little updates are being added constantly to improve crap that no one even cares about or pay attention to. We have thousands of supporters and get nothing. There comes a point when I have to ask myself does Mojang even listen or even care.. I also agree with you that after the API they should have no excuse to not pay us at least the slightest bit of attention.
Sorry if this post sounds a little whiney, just kinda getting irritated how we get ignored and Mojang just sits back and acts like we aren't loyal players of their game.
But what should we do? If they think two people can do everything on their own they will see where this will lead. But who are we to tell them how to do their work? Of course, we bought the game and everyone of us is the reason why Mojang has such a success but nonetheless it is their game. They could simply stop doing anything with it. Hell, they could even remove the download link and delete every single account if they really want to (and give us back our money, of course). But instead they are still working on the game, adding and changing things. Whether or not these are things that are wanted or things that are needed doesn't matter. They are doing something.
The thing is just: We don't know what they are doing. We see what has been changed when a new update is released but we don't see what other things they are working one. Think about it: Do we know Dinnerbone is not working on the terrain right now? Do we know how much progress he has made so far? No, we don't. If I were Dinnerbone I wouldn't include a half-finished version of a new generator, I would wait until it's working properly because the terrain is something that stays once generated
Also I think some people are overastimating Mojang's competence. Basically they are all hobby coders. I don't know how professional Exalm is but as it seems he isn't very comparable to jeb_ and Dinnerbone. I mean, if Dinnerbone had the skills to create completely new terrain in one week he would simply do that so he would have more time to concentrate on more important things. Did anyone already made an attempt to show Exalm's terrain to Mojang? Maybe a friendly letter or e-mail that says
"Dear Mojangstas,
most people dislike the terrain. Exalm has made an attempt to improve it and it got positive feedback from the community. Would you please be so kind to take a look at it and see if you like it. Many people would be very happy to see this mod implemented."
If this has already happened then either they didn't notice it because of the huge amount of mail they are getting or they don't like Exalm's solution and we can't do nothing against it because it is their game.
I'm not professional coder either. So what?
BTW thanks for reminding, I will update it to 1.4.2.

Do you know how completely and overwhelmingly pathetic that sounds? God, I hope you never have to run a company in your life time because I guarantee with a motto like "Who cares what my customers want? I'm going to do whatever I want." you won't get very far at all and the business will fail very quickly.
I highly doubt Jeb and Dinnerbone are more focused on changing their game than they are on their players. We are their main source of income and that is how they make money to support their families. Obviously they aren't making the game for themselves to enjoy while letting the rest of the world tag along like a third wheel. This isn't some "little thing on the side" that they do in their free time like people try to make it out to be. Mojang is a world renowned top-of-the-line gaming company and Minecraft is one the most popular games of all time to sell.
It is their JOB to please their player base, not completely be oblivious to what their customers want. They want to improve the game to bring in more customers to bring in more revenue. And what better way to improve the game than by asking the millions and millions of people who play it on a daily basis what could use some improvement?
But isn't don't caring about customer's wishes the complaint you have about Mojang? Aren't you saying Mojang doesn't listen to the terrain complainers and just does other things or did I get something wrong?
With "you" I don't mean you, Shread, but the terrain complainers in general.
Like I said, how far do you expect your company to grow with that kind of motto? And this thread isn't a complaint about Mojang's lack of attention, it's a complaint and suggestion to improve what we are complaining about. There are already threads about the lack of attention the issue receives from Mojang, but this is not that thread.
My post was simply a retaliation to what your previous one stated. That Mojang should not care about their customers. I just wanted to point out how idiotic that sounded to me.

Aware of that, but it would be a nice addition.

Sadly, I can't find any. D:
