I'm quite sorry to say it, but you're right guys! After 1.8 the map generation has became more "realistic" but also more boring! It is much we want? An epic amazing terrain to be seen more often... Do we need to use mods to get what we want? I think that a non realistic terrain with "floating islands" is better than the current realistic one. Why would we play games if we wanted realistic terrain - it's all around us in real life! And even in real life, the realistic terrain mojang want to make in minecraft looks better than in the game actually. We dont want a monotone snow forest which contains tree near tree. We want epic amazing tall trees of height 50 blocks atleast, epic lakes with waterfalls, perhaps cliffs that have vines and jungle on them... such things.
This can be achieved via texture packs, but again, must we use mods and texture packs to have more beautiful terrain?
Today the seeds are shared because "I FOUND A NPC VILLAGE WITH 10 DIAMONDS!!". However i found a seed that should be shared the old way and i think THIS is the right place to post it - where people like you can see it, not the ones that ask "Where is the loot?". http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1485171-132-amazing-extreme-hills-cliff-lake-seed/
I wish i saw things like this everyday, but from the years i play minecraft, i've seen this thing only once. And i didn't missed the moment to share with you guys. Thanks for creating this thread, i totally agree with you. If we keep it up, mojang might eventually hear us.
Sorry, but what's so great in that seed?
Just EH, they are like that in every world.

They WERE like that. they are no more. Is that what you see every day?
I dont think so.
They were like that in 1.8 too. And they can be found in absolutely every world. Really, what's great about dull empty mountains with depressing color that are also not varied?
Wake up man, we're not in 1.8 anymore.
And i can do nothing about the "depressing color" it's from the extreme hills biome.
1. Where did I say that it's 1.8 now? Show me.
The point is that you said that it was not like that, but it was since 1.8. They were same desolate ****.
2. Yep. That's one of issues.

2. Why are you such a hater anyway? I show one of the few "nice" terrains left after 1.8 and you say "desolate **** with bad color, it's empty, bla bla bla..."
1. You disagree? It's just biome, not unique formation like pre-1.8.
2. Again, you disagree? They are empty — true. They have shitty color — true. They are stretched version of 1-5-block bumps and not true mountains — true too.

Those are things i can't change. But mojang can. It is the main reason this thread to be created in the first place.
And no, i'm not talking about the shitty color of the extreme hills, not about the emptiness, lack of trees or other objects, i speak exactly about the formation of the place. Look at the screenshots again. Generate any random world with extreme hills. You see the diffirence? I'm speaking of those steep cliffs, those waterfalls and this huge lake which caused them. There are even some arches of stone and other things. Is THAT what you see in every extreme hills biome?
Formation, you say? Do you know that noise generator that created mountain formations in 1.7.3 is not used? These mountains are forced. If there would be plain, it would have same formation, just with 4-5 block height. And that's their true height, and they are stretched in extreme hills.

After reading your post (unfortunately I didn't have time to read past the first page of comments, so I don't know if this has been considered yet) I realized that there is a compromise that will please everyone. Add another option, just a box you can check, that enables 'realistic' map generation vs. 'random' generation. This would take some work to perfect, but you could even just enable the old map generator with the new blocks added onto it. In any case, I support. (note, my primary play style is on creative, building super structures, and I feel this would improve building ability on the map)

Old generation is more realistic. It does not have deserts near tundras, has realistic beaches and forest mountains.
Firstoff i have to say, i've not read much. But enough to write that.
It's true, the old generator generated worlds wich were more interresting.
Now there's that boring grass color, this boring flat areas. I agreen, they should improve the generator.
Okay, great, guys. But why: "Seeds Are Useless!"?
A random number generator must have a seed. There's no alternative. Every world has a seed. If you don't enter a seed,
it generates one to your current computer time. Without a seed, all generated worlds would be the same. They can't remove the seed, but they can change what the generator is doing with this seed. That there are more mountains, more whatever.
I don't know if somebody wrote something like this, but anyway....
And correct me if i'm wrong. Thank you for reading.
He used a bit wrong terminology. To be even more exact, whole pseudorandom generation is impossible without seed. Worlds will be same if their seeds is same, e.g. 0. But you can't remove seed completely without stopping to use pseudorandom gen, like in Superflat.
So for player seeds are really useless. Because all worlds are already almost same. Technicall they are not, but that's not the point.

The concept is that the seed textbox should be removed / the seed forum should be removed / seed sharing shouldn't exist because there is no need for it since every world is basically identical.

i think this is a great idea! im tired of the same old terrain and i think that some extreme mountains like ones almost above the clouds would be AWESOME!
Although I am usually the kind of guy that respects Mojangs development on minecraft, I can't deny that this is absolutely true. The first world I was in, I still remember, spawned me on a small island in front of a giant cliff overlooking the ocean. Amazing, as I recall it. I've never seen any floating islands outside extreme hills biomes since 1.8, no waterfalls, and no giant cliffs overlooking the ocean. Something just went wrong and it would be awesome if they could revert what's making the terrain so flat and repetitive.
No, this is not what he meant. He never said the seed forum or seed textbox should be removed. What he wants is a different generator. With a different generator, the seed forum will be interesting again. He actually wants the direct opposite of what you just said: He wants the seed forum to be restored.
EDIT: Also, funny thing on that ocean issue: It was the minecraft community itself that asked for bigger oceans, and Mojang simply answered. Also, if you think an ocean is too big, why try to cross it? Why not simply turn the other way, into the perhaps still awesome lands you can discover?
Actually this is what he meant, but that goes into improving the new generator. If you can't point out the flaws of the system you can't say how it can be improved.
Did you really think I thought he was suggesting to remove the seed-related things?
I started playing in 1.2.5 (yes i know) and i don't know the Completely awesome terrain generation you've been talking about :\ BUT i think that maybe a mod could be created to implement the terrain generation into the newer versions of Minecraft while still including all the mineshafts and stuff from the 1.8 adventure update. its just an idea and i'm no good with code and stuff. if someone can do this that would be cool

EDIT: didnt know about this
NBXlite, Generator Ports, Better World Generation.
And outdated: NBX, More World Types.
So that was already done many times. But that does not solve this issue at all, since default terrain is still crappy.

The spoiler says 'We dont want 1.7 generation', wth.
The 1.7 generator doesn't have ravines, mushroom biomes, rivers, etc. We want the current generator to be as good as the old one, not to revert back to the old one. I think that's what it means.
I watch old minecraft videos to view the old terrain.I started playing during 1.8.I did see some interesting terrain such as large floating islands but those were very rare.I have also found large under ground lakes which I also miss.
I hope nothing I'm gonna say has been stated before on the 61 pages I just skipped because... well, I have a life.
At first I need to say I do not really know what I am talking about. I started playing Minecraft in Beta 1.3 Demo. I think full release 1.2 was just released about this time. Unfortunately I literally spend the whole 200 minutes I could play demo underground because I really enjoy mining in a straight line for hours (probably I understood the Mine in Minecraft correctly). So everything I know about the old terrain generation I got from two Minecraft series which are running since Alpha 1.1 and from the bit of the PC Gamer demo world I generated and I'm still playing on. It's hard for me to directly compare the old and new terrain because they resemble each other like an apple and the first episode of Futurama do. Just speaking of nothing but biomes the preB1.8 terrain was pretty much the same everywhere. The only significant differences between the biomes were the quantity of the trees and lakes (not counting desserts and snow biomes, of course). Today the biomes are really varied. You can tell in which biome you are by just looking at the terrain for a single second. Whether or not you like one specific biome doesn't matter, there will always be one that looks completely different.
Maybe I'm just too stupid to notice any other difference but as it seems the only difference between preB1.8 and postB1.8 terrain (apart from biomes and structures) is just that mountains are only generated in extreme hills biomes and not everywhere which I think is not much of an issue. I don't want these "WTF look at this awesome carved-in hill"-hills around every corner. I prefer flat terrain where I can build all this useless stuff I normally build. Of course there might be people who enjoy climbing. Furthermore hills don't fit into every landscape and if I understood the system correctly (I never do) hills used to be able to spawn everywhere. ...
I actually wanted to write more but I just noticed 12w39a was released which means I need to test the new lightning system. The remaining part of this post will eventually be written later.

Another person who thinks that that Beta generator only generates mountains. You think that because you see mountains on seed reviews?

I haven't seen any seed reviews before full release 1.3. I'm just saying I don't see any significant difference between "this is awesome ****"-beta terrain and "flat and boring"-nowadays terrain except the mountains. What else could be awesome other that these overhanging mountains everyone wants to see in every biome? Most likely it's not the beauty of the forests. Remember I haven't said anything about structures, caves and oceans because I was interrupted by 12w39a. But be honest, what was generated before Beta 1.8?
Trees
Lakes
Caves
Ores
Dungeons
5 biomes whose only difference is the amount of trees
3 (or 2?) that look different
And last but not least gigantic overhanging hills and mountains with huge holes and caves and waterfalls and whatever
Correct me if I'm wrong but these were the only things I could think of spontaniously. I'm not saying the old terrain was bad. I'm just saying in MY opinion the today's terrain is much more exciting and diversified. But of course everything can be improved.
1. Beaches.
2. Random terrain —> smooth mountains and seas, good shores. Sometimes terrain is extreme, sometimes it is flatter than now.
3. Random tree density.
4. Better biome placement. 10 overworld biomes. Rainforest, seasonal forest, savanna and shrublands were removed in 1.8.
5. Natural colors, good gradual transitions.
6. Random-sized caves.
And now:
1. Flat terrain, fixed tree density, pretty much identical biome size and form. So one biome is same as the other biome of same type.
2. Ugly colors, acid transitions.
3. Bad biome placement. Taiga near jungle? Tundra near swamp?
4. Gravel beaches are nonexistent. Beach biomes are ugly and sloppy.
5. Weird patches of sand and gravel under water. No comment.
6. Incomplete villages that spawn above ravines.
7. Mostly infinite caves.
8. Strongholds and mineshafts mixed with each other. Also they are way too common.
9. Rivers. Ok, ok, these ones are good. If they are not in swamp.
Just EH, they are like that in every world.
