I agree. People claim that the only reason alpha terrain was shared solely based on terrain generation and the ones today are shared based on structure placement and terrain generation and this is a load of crap. The seeds today are shared for only structure generation and as you can see in the first video of the OP what is considered "amazing" terrain generation is considered "Just an average hill" in alpha generation.
And I'll admit before 1.8 maps were shared for only terrain generation because yes terrain generation was the only reason to share it. But not people act like the only reason to share current seeds is structure generation. Which I also agree with to a point, hence the problem. The terrain generation isn't what it used to be! It's not exciting and awing enough.
Now sharing seeds for structure placement is fine by me, but it's the fact that it's the only thing people can share seeds for.
I just did something I thought would be completely retarded, insane and would probably crash Minecraft...made a world with the seed ''-1''. Turns out that even that seed has a boring swamp-pond, a few cows, jungle trees and a fern bed.
Back on-topic, I agree that we should have a better world generator, maybe some ''biome regions'' that are either ''flatlands'' or ''epic'', and within those there are the biomes (like, a flatlands would have some jungles/oak forests, and coniferous forests and the like, and ''epic'' would contain mountains with jungles near the base, forests at mid-base, conifer/snow areas at mid-top, and just snow and rock on top)
eh?
I agree with you to the fullest extent, but if someone didn't want to use a seed and fine a simply amazing structure, what are his chances? His chances are low, minimal at that. So seeds are useless for some players, but others use them and like them, so they are still good for those that are mostly sightseers.

You're always using a seed bro. Even if you leave the text blank it uses the current time as a seeding code. All seeds do is basically start off the world and then the world builds on from there. Basically we're arguing they could give us preset worlds and we wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
Ooh, and if mountains generated in ranges instead of clomps! Like, when one mountain is generated, it has a 65% chance of spawning another mountain next to it at a random point between (some number here) meters away, and eventually it will reach that 35% where it does not make a mountain and the chain stops growing. And if it's restricted to a random degree from the first mountain, then the next can only be in a 90-degree region in-line with the two mountains, and the next with the third one and the second one, it would be even cooler! and nestled in between 2 ranges can be a nice flat valley with lots of room to build.
And if there are glaciers in-between the ranges that aren't far apart...
eh?

Generation does not work like that. It does not "spawn mountains here and there", it just uses Perlin noise. But now it has restrictions based on biome.

Two things, I add my signature to this list, and try out PipeDream as your seed and big biomes as your world generation type.
No screenshots, sorry, and capitalization seems to modify your spawn point reliably, (which on default generation is pretty useful, but on big biomes means that you are thousands of blocks from the interesting stuff)

Extreme hills, we meet again.
All I see near spawn is a lot of shear cliffs dropping straight down, which I believe is a generation glitch with extreme hills on large biomes.
I came in 1.1, but i love the intresting terrain from pre 1.8 . sure it was harder to build, but thats the point. more intresting terrain would make building much more verssatile. to you !
Actually it was not hard to build.
Such formations were pretty rare (Though not nonexistent, like now) and flat terrain was there. Just not as abundant as now.
Wow this is amazing! The fact that it's endless sorta sucks, but there are beautiful areas in it! It's kind of sad though that only Mountain Biomes are interesting now. Everything else is so blah.
All I see are dull desolate mountains. And he is using a texture pack. Without it mountains will also have depressing color.

this is the worst bad seed topic I have seen yet. more than half of minecraft loves the current biomes and world gen. this is an opinion not a fact. I love the world gen and all the awesome mountains. if you think minecraft should have better biomes either make a mod or quit minecraft. I see your reasons but the only one that I understand completely is more trees on mountains and more barely touching flouting islands. I think mojang is doing it's best with the world gen. also, minecraft is a sandbox game and it is supposed to be simple and imaginative. they are working on big things for minecraft and at the current time they wont or cant do a thing about the world gen. what if mojang likes the world gen though. I like it and I bet the only reson this topic has supporters is because the people who love the world gen wouldnt even think about coming here

And you forgot 2 things:
1. Old generator: Don't like terrain? Find better place. New generator: Don't like terrain? Quit minecraft, since the terrain is same everywhere.
2. Explain the reasons of removing beaches and other features.
So actually your post is opinion. And this thread has facts.
About half of players: they joined already with this terrain and don't know that it was better in Beta.
Awesome mountains? Really? Where they are?
It is sandbox game, so it should not be dull and desolate!
Mods are not solution. I have a mod. Does it solve issue with bad terrain in vanilla game? No.
I somewhat agree with you. But i think its not hills and mountains in other biomes we need, what we need is something special, for example i hate wandering the ocean looking for land but if there was pirates with massive ships (or something else special) in the ocean i would love to explore them. I enjoy epic hills and jungles because they are unique. I think mojang has caught on because they just made temples for the desert and jungle.
Some of my ideas are:
Pirates for the ocean (with big ships you could also craft)
Random HUGE trees in the forest and jungle (like the one in avatar)
Better villagers and villages (for example there could be ones right by the ocean that pirates would trade at)
Really tall grass for grasslands (up to 3 blocks high)
Really the posabilitys are endless just like a rubix cube
Edit:i do like the new caves systems though (but they are a little to common but the size is perfect, its a great adventure to explore one.)

No. There is one reason: Things you suggested are not random. It's like adding more dull biomes: More variety, but after you saw them all, you will not see any more interesting things.
Terrain in Beta generator was random. If you saw some cool thing, you always could find better one.

true but some of the things i put are random the giant trees would be the pirates could all have unique ships every npc village coud have random buildings (selected out of hunderds) that way no 2 villages are the same.
i know how the old terain was because unlike some of the people here who have said the new stuff is better (witch it isnt) i played before the new terain.

Even if from hundreds, they will not be random. It's impossible to make them unique. Try to find 2 same mountains in Beta. You can't do that. And things you suggested are also not naturally generated.

Well your mod (NBXlite) definitely keeps me from quitting Minecraft, that's for sure... But I'd rather much have a vanilla fix instead of third-party solutions.

Well, you can't use it everywhere. Bad terrain is one of main things I don't like SMP because of.
Did Notch/Jeb explain those changes? I don't believe they did this only because of rivers and villages. :/

Wow. I thought I was the only person who thought like this....
My favorite types of homes are the ones that start built into mountains and expand with tons of levels of different rooms below the surface, but I can't do that without running into a cave. It get extremely irritating.
I don't mean to sound like a nostalgia freak, but the old terrain made the game much better with its landscape.
Sure all the new stuff is cool...in moderation. Not like it is now.
Now sharing seeds for structure placement is fine by me, but it's the fact that it's the only thing people can share seeds for.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

The new generation is rather boring.
The 1.3 generator is pret-ty nice though.
