This is the first suggestion that is a big deal to me i totally agree with everything here I've only played minecraft sense 1.0 (but seen a lot of beta) and i really noticed in 1.1 to 1.2 mountains disappeared and everything became flat i sometimes play 1.0 because of that.
its gotten soo bad that multiple mods have ben made to fix this and have gotten pretty popular. i think the problem is more recent than 1.8 because the terain was pretty epic in 1.0 though in 1.1 i saw less and less mountians and as of now 1.2 all i see is flat plains and every once in a while an extreem hils biome that turns out to be tiny. i cant see how mojang could end mountians in a game whare mountians were the main most epic biome the only reason i play minecraft is because of the epic landscape, and that's been degrading ever sense 1.0
caves; no one likes running down a twisted claustrophobic cave just for one tunnel to end after another remember when caves actually led somewhere not just tiny ravines but huge open vast caverns with lakes of lava and dark tunnels that led in through the ceiling far above that's what i want in caves and i bet i'm not alone. make cave exploring exciting!!!
Jeb and mojang shouldn't be focusing on small changes like tripwires and trading though they are awesome i would give all of that away for better world generation. 1.0 was epic and i want a version of it back i agree we don't want 1.7 back it was right for mojang to ditch that but the peak of awesome world generation was definitely 1.9 to 1.0 everything after that went down hill, mountains no longer exist and neither do vast caverns and now we see snowy beaches and snowy deserts. bring what every minecrafter wants back!!!
on a side note hit the little green button if u liked this
What? 1.1 is less flat than 1.0 and Beta 1.8. It became flat in 1.8, before it looked like this:
Rare thing, right? Such things were the reason for adding option for entering seeds. Now option is useless, as there are no rare and cool things like on screenshot.
At least we have the old days mod but mods stop after a long time and then we will miss the 1.2.5 worlds after like 10 versions so we should be happy with what we have. if i would do a lets play i would use old days but minecraft with no 1.8 world generation is not the same minecraft as the one with it, Its way different. sadface.
1.8 generation? The worst ever. The only cool things in it are swamps.

i meant 1.0 as in official release i sometimes play using the 1.0 .jar and the world did became significantly flatter in 1.1 no more deep mountain ranges with lava falls, water falls and beautiful cliffs and overhangs and NOW!!! just tiny rare patches of extreme hills that are still pretty small
You forgot a very important thing. Every update all the seeds are broken..Another reason why they are useless. And I can agree that I can predict all the terrain. So plain...flat...plain....*Sanity loss*
yeah i know right, ive been playing minecraft since around alpha and for minecraft going from a epic game i love to play to boring and repetative in one day. in fact i never used mods before 1.8 terrain
Guys I don't want to sound like a jerk, but seriously can we stop with the mods? This isn't a thread to advertise mods and if you are a mod dev and you are replying to comments to show off your mod, please stop this isn't the place for it and it is very disrespectful. If you continue posting off-topic posts that do not contribute to the thread as a whole I will report them :/
Let's get the thread back on topic, please?
Thank you.

This is supported by me 100%. I mean, who dousn't want 404 back? Or this AMAZING 1.7.3 seed I found, Compton Is Crazy? I'm not saying "HURR DURR I WANTS TEH OWLD GENERATAH" but I'm not supporting the Swiss Cheese generator. I'm not kidding, that's what I call it. Flat on the top with lots of holes, and if you cut into it, all you get is holes. I only build in Extreme Hill biomes with a Jungle border. That's why I only have 1-2 worlds. As for multiplayer, we make huge terraforming bees, where we spread the word, then all get together to make awesome features. I shouldn't have to do this. As I now realize I am ranting, I'll stop. But I want some awesome stuff, not Swiss Cheese!
I start to play since 1.8, but, time later, I play several old versions (Beta 1.3, 1.6.6, 1.7.3, Alpha 1.2.6, and older), and in that time, I get realy surprised how Minecraft was better (in the terrain at least).
Things that I hate of 1.8+:
Caves everywhere. BUT EVERYWHERE. When I start a world, I find annoying every cave, because they are ugly holes in the terrain. The ravines are cool, but they are very common. I saw a ravine top of another several times. And when you enter, the caves are conected to everywhere, and endless. Whorst, sometimes the caves are fully overworld, so they make holes like a gigant worm.
Biome mix. Since 1.8, the temperature and humidity (rainfall) start be defined by the biome (before, those props was setted on the generation, before biomes) and the biomes start to be convined realy near. Stupid things like Tundra near Desert start to be generated (frecuently). The Jungle is much common (i throught that will be rare), more common than Extreme Hills. Even, something that I never saw, is Tundra near Taiga, never... The grass is too ugly when you go to another biome...
Ugly plains. Plains are the ugly, pointless and desert (more than Deserts). The are simply bad, full a of tall grass, and nothing more (well... caves?). They used to be another biome, no special, but not so annoying...
Beaches are the worst thing. Whatching the beach of before, and the new (1.0 or 1.1?) ones, you can see that the new are smaller, and less transitional. Before 1.8, beaches was in another layes, and they don't touch the grass (well, sometimes yes). More bigger, and the water on it was frecuently 1, 2 or even 3 blocks, nothing more. They are flat, but fancy. And the gravel ones are too awesome (and real btw).
Extreme Hills take all the funny mountains part. Before, Extreme Hills does not exist, instead of this, you can watch how they mix with the biomes (specialy Desers) making awesome landscapes (like in the seeds video). The others biomes have "<Biome> Hills" like "Jungle Hills", "Desert Hills", "Plains Hills", etc. But they aren't good enought like the old Cliffs.
Bored Ocean. When 1.8 come, new biomes come, like River and Ocean. The primary function of Oceans was make continents and separate land pieces. But, I would like more if they would come with more thing in the ocean: underwater construccions/dugeons, fish (mob), better boats, larger and rare islands (not Mushroom, something better, at least make the mushrooms islands more common), etc. But they don't. So, the Ocean is kind bored sometimes...
Iregular Swaps. I like the new swaps (anyway, the old green was better :/), but they are common, and the grass transition is ugly. Nothing more to say.
In conclution, I like to say that the new generator have nice things:
Mineshafts (or whatever) they are nice, but common, making them more uncommon and a teasure for the player would be great.
Ravines, they too are awesome, but common, and ugly for the landscape...
Villages, uncommon, is ok. But should be in more biomes, and better convined with those (several generation gliches can be found).
Rivers are nice, and make a nice landscape. Convined with old beaches, will be better.
Jungle. Nice biome, but should be more uncommon, because they are annoyng when you found in mass (and they are bigger that the others).
Thats what i have to say.
I realy sorry about my bad spell :(. I'm not from USA or english-speaking country :I
i meant 1.0 as in official release i sometimes play using the 1.0 .jar and the world did became significantly flatter in 1.1 no more deep mountain ranges with lava falls, water falls and beautiful cliffs and overhangs and NOW!!! just tiny rare patches of extreme hills that are still pretty small
by the way i love ur mod exalm
Ah, extreme hills.
They are flatter, yes. But other terrain is less flat, as they added hills as technical biomes.
You forgot a very important thing. Every update all the seeds are broken..Another reason why they are useless. And I can agree that I can predict all the terrain. So plain...flat...plain....*Sanity loss*
In 1.2 there is additional "hidden" world type for it that does not generate jungle.
So they didn't break seeds with 1.2.
I didn't even notice this before because I play on servers where there is constant PvP and griefing, which means everybody is underground mining diamond or fighting to the death
But now that I've seen this I really realize the significance of that. As much as I like servers like that, I only really started using them after 1.7. I was looking for something new, because everything was so boring. Single player, in my eyes, became pretty much pointless because there was nothing to get me excited. Sometimes I will stumble upon a swamp that is literally flat. Just a layer of grass, MAYBE some trees or lilypads or something.
And there are always endless caves and mineshafts and things. I have to dig at bedrock in order to not get lost in endless caves.
Spawners used to be so rare, but the other day I found a skeleton spawner, a spider spawner, and two cave spider spawners, all within 30 blocks of eachother. The fun of dungeons have been ruined.
I support everything about this, 100%. If it comes down to a vote, you can count on mine.
i prefer the new flat terrains besides people do prefer flat terrains if not they would not have added super flat worlds and no seeds are different i still hate the caves and dungeons but they post villages because there are cool things in the chest and testificates are fun to murder and steal their houses overhangs are be cool and there still are some they are just hard to find or you can use world edit and make one yourself or download some mod or something besides villages are good for the mca mod and some villages have diamonds in it and flat terrains make it easy to build a shack for the first night you have more space to build on the overhangs if you fall you might die even if its over the ocean you might land on shore since overhangs dont go to deep oceans and there are squids everywhere in oceans in 1.7 there was no glitch that squid can spawn near lava (im not sure about that but i think so anyways) in 1.8 there is that glitch its fun to push squids into lava (sorry i dont use grammar for those grammar police ppl)

Whoa whoa whoa! Ever hear of a thing called PUNCTUATION? I can't tell if you've just insulted my mother or are throwing mashed potatoes in the pentagon. What? His post had nothing to do with that? Oh, well I didn't know. I mean he can effectively use parenthesis one of the most hardest skills to master in writing next to hypens and respective properties.
Seriously, what are you saying? Lemme try to get through the whole post without my eyes popping out from reading to fast with no limits.
*huff* *huff* I feel out of breath now. Looking at your post, you are misguided. After writing completely before misguided, I deleted it, because I feel no one can be ALL wrong, even if the first impression would imply. So to actually answer you, you say that 1. people like the flat terrain, and 2, you like the flat terrain. Well, by your wording, it seems like you like flat terrain because other people do, and the fact is you just don't mind flat terrain. Playing with the various mods that add the effect people are asking for on this thread, I assure you that there is plenty of flat land to build with even with the heights, and sometimes in chunks' width or more. Secondly, could you link me the thread that says: "So what about that flat terrain in Minecraft, huh? Can we get some likes?" If and when you find this thread does not exist, you will discover the previous has just been player tolerance. As one man once said "Something's gotta give." People don't like it, they just deal with it and most players just don't know what they've missed, or are 12 and go around killing NPCs, randomly slaying animals while yelling idiotic songs over their microphones. Lemme try to be you for a moment: so yeah i mean npcs are there so you can get to know them and killing them and looting isnt really what the game is supposed to be about jeb even said himself he wanted the player to help and interact with the villagers and help them not kill them also if you dont like overhangs dont go near them and if you didnt know theres a little shift key in the game that you can use to sneak so you dont fall of the edges of buildings or cliffs like you said also the old generation was more about either conforming to the land or really standing out it isnt hard to make a house on the side of a mountain with windows sticking out *gasp* My goodness, now do you see what you do to people? Now, instead of just going >quote >enter >enter text: I could read that perfectly so i dont know what youre talking about >post, how about giving a meaningful reply on the real issue, using proper punctuation (i dont care abt abbreviations or capitalization and i dont care abt apostrophes), or don't reply at all?
I agree with this 100%, and I didn't even play Minecraft before 1.8! Sure, I find cool things from time to time, but I rarely ever find any terrain that's truly unique or breathtaking. Earth is full of many interesting, unique formations and locations, even if there's still a lot of flat land. Most importantly, you can find just about anything anywhere, not just limited to certain "biomes". Make this true for Minecraft as well!
yeah thats true, i personally think minecraft needs some fantasy terrain seeeing as it is a fantasy game the only fantasy like terrain is mushroom islands, and ive only have 1st hand seen them once. it was where i spawned :/ which wasnt any fun

If the modder is implementing the feature being requested, surely that makes it relevant to discuss "is this what I want?"

I don't want to discuss mods here, but it's hard to me to ignore questions. :/
Anyway, using mod just for 1.7.3 terrain screenshots (for people who say that current terrain is more interesting) is not offtopic here.
//Again, sorry.
