This is why you don't have my support. I don't want your weird ****. Now if you can generate your weird **** and it won't affect my existing world, fine, but I don't want it integrated.
An option I support (not that I really care but if you want it, cool; I hope it works out for you). A change to the whole world generator, no. Screw that.
But that's the thing. It won't affect your world (unless you mean terrain updates in general, they always **** up worlds at some area). If you find some "weird ****" you can ignore it. All the flatness and all of the open space will all be there and will be very possible to find if this happens.
Well why don't we just ignore the current generation as it is, you might ask. Well, you can't. You're forced to see this type of terrain everywhere you go.
I did some more exploring today and all biomes but extreme hills are giving me beaches 5+ blocks wide, sometimes up to 20.
That's good and all - seed please?
As for the "weird ****" you speak of - what we are asking for is not "weird ****" It's height variation within all biomes and not only extreme hills. And we're not asking for the height variation to be over abundant either so most of the map will still be flat (or at least a vast majority of it to support those of you who like building) and then another large majority of it would be more diverse and unpredictable for those of us who like to explore.
omg...if i hadnt already been crying from staring at the computer screen too long I would have when I saw that first video.
I back this movement entirely! but I do think that wecould help to solve flat terrain problems by making a "field" biome: a biome that is identical to a grassland in every way but is never larger than 30x30 squares wide and is five times more likely to generate. that would solve any "flat ground" problems better.
I personally dont think that this is a huge problem though anyway.
oh and the coolest seed I know has a mountain jungle on an island and the seed is just the maximum # of 9's you can type in.
then again...that was only because it was the first jungle i'd seen.
I completely agree with the concept of changing terrain gen to be more varied and unique. Right now everything is so repetitive and the biomes are so distinct and boring that once you've seen one jungle, you've seen them all.
In addition, terrain gen should be remodeled to fit the 256 block height limit. I mean, who doesn't want massive 200-block tall mountain ranges in the middle of a desert or jungle ridge?

Thank you both for your support.
I do kinda like the idea of having a flat land biome - that does seem like a nice idea but I think the should be about the same size as every other biome as a 30 x 30 field doesn't really provide much room for building But I love the concept. Might be something to look into.
And right, once you've seen one jungle: the rest will be nothing new. It's a sad fact. :/

the reason I want the "field" idea is so you will ALWAYS have a spot to build your house on nearby without changes. not as a new biome entirely or to make grasslands more common. remember...it looks exactly the same as a grassland. ppl might not even notice its a biome when they step into it.
alternatively the chance that you will spawn at the border between biomes could be increased. that would solve building issues.
we could also appreciate foggy moors with random bits of mossy cobblestone(repreenting granite) and stuff laying around. if you dont know what that looks like vist england. and dont get caught there in the rain! ( its watery hell)

In minecraft, usually I start out by getting some wood, crafting some items, and holing up in a nice, pretty place and mine until morning comes. Then, I get up out of the ground, and I already have a basement. So I chop down the trees, flatten the area out with dirt re-positioning, and build my quaint home among the land. I don't need a dang "flat biome" to help. Minecraft is survival (in survival mode). We don't need a "oh, I'm sorry we took away your completely flat land that you don't need to do any work on to build" baby bottle thrown in our mouths. You can easily work to make your home the best it can be. Screw the people who want already flat land. Lemme tell you, when I spend a day terraforming to make my house and I stand back and look at it, it's beautiful. And I'm happy. I go inside and continue my adventures. I definitely don't want to be sucking Mojang's breasts building on some stupid small biome added just to keep anyone happy. If anything, add an option to turn off certain biomes during world gen. Make a giant all forest world. Or jungle. That would be fun.

I couldn't have said it better myself! It's like everyone who is whining about us wanting the old terrain back (or a similar terrain I mean) want stuff given to them. Those are usually the people who don't want to put forth effort into their builds they want things the easy way. I love this post I would give +15 but I can only give 1 ;(
I am not making an "I approve of this message" joke. Also, I do personally agree with the endless caves, there's too many of them. Caves are horridly large.
I was there before 1.8 but i didn't play much. now that i see present minecraft i wish i had played more minecraft then...
I almost cried when i saw what it is now.
I support this cause 110%...
I wish I had Notch's e-mail so i could e-mail him a link to this page.
Things that should be added to minecraft to make it a better game without structure generation is:
More biomes eg. Meadows of flowers and tall grass with bright green grass, cliff/ beach biome like in the gargamel seed, beaches on its own, Forest mountains and some more.
There should, as you said be a more diverse landscape where mountains have great overhangs and All the other biomes don't look exactly the same for example, desert and plains, no matter the seed you go on, they all look the same.
Lastly for the landscape to be less realistic because I don't want to find a mountain that builds up in two blocks up one along everywhere I go, and more stones and ores to make mining and decorating more rewarding and make the landscape look amazing like the red rock biomes in better biomes mod and such. Overall, less realistic and brighter biomes
i agree with this, the land is boring...
ever since biomes appeared minecraft got worse
now i have to keep spawning worlds to get a decent place to build, and then usually its still boring
there isnt a reason to explore the world and the mountains are nothing
(i also liked when pumpkins were more of a trophy and limited and what u use them for now is stupid)
Well I happened to get a pretty good seed, but it took forever to get it. And I never really leave the area because the land around is it is just plain platitudinous. I remember the good old days where every day I couldn't wait to go see what was behind what I had yet to explore.
i agree with you! though ive never played the beta versions, ive seen viedos, some realy cool things! now the most interesting world gen thing ive seen is a ravine and a few floating sandblocks! and sometimes a find a cool seed and try to use it and it doesnt work or i enjoy for 5 seconds then get bored.
bring back the old world generator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All those quotes tell how bad it was to take away the poor old Minecraft that had the nice overhangs, cliffs and just everything else those quotes show to notch and jeb how terrible it was, but to clear it up the biome's are nice except for the swamp biome's, good for wood collecting but just so buggy it goes in the river biome and swamp water, and the grass is not nice and green and the swamp looks very ugly if you would of looked at it from a bird's-eye view, really Mojang you ruined seeds.
We beg 1.3 to bring us back better seeds or at least a option to bring back old awesome seeds
For now we must use nostalgia mods or the awesome "Generator Ports" mod which says it's supposed to make worlds from old versions of minecraft
I wouldn't be over-dramatic about all this and say that the current terrain generation is terrible or that it's never exciting as I love the new biomes and their distinctive themes.
However, I agree that apart from the Mountain biomes, Jungle and some of the Mushroom biomes, There isn't much excitement going on when it comes to hills/mountains and such. The mountain biomes are cool but they feel empty with nothing growing there, The jungle biomes are so packed with trees that you can't really see the cool terrain generations. Mushroom biomes well to be honest I always thought they were ugly and pointless :/ I would rather see something more interesting to be made instead of the mushroom biomes.
I think the reason that the world feels less exciting/flat is because before we really only had normal, snow and 'desert' beach biomes. So the normal foresty biomes would have all these wild crazy terrain generations.
The problem now is that they toned down the randomness and the terrain height possibilities for these normal biomes, I think if they make this specific biome more like the old generation style that it would bring back enough diversity without ruining the more distinctive biomes such as for example swamps but at the same time I also like how the new normal biomes are generated now.
What I would do is make is so that every other normal biome that is generated has the random generation ability from the older system. That way all the distinctive biomes are as they should be and some of the standard biomes look like the ones that are in the game now but that the other half can be as crazy and surprising as before the change.
I think this would make for a nice compromise.

I used to have a cozy home in a large snowy overhang, until 1.8 came. Snowy overhangs are gone. Crazy terrain is gone. I just spam made new worlds, and they're all flat islands surrounded by ocean. They do nothing to keep me in them; they're the reason I learned to use MCedit. They're the reason I play Minecraft less. They're the reason I started playing custom maps so much. I can't mine anymore; there is only spelunking.
Think of a Minecraft where you share seeds, not for finding cool villages, or for never ending ravines, or the overabundance of abandoned mineshafts (which are more common then one may think), but for finding marvelous mountain ranges, breath-taking oceans of hills and beautful springs and waterfalls, gigantic overhangs over looking fields of flowers, and floating islands surrounding a valley of jungles. This may all seem drastic: but very possible.
but I remember when seeds were shared not because "I spawned next to an NPC village" but because "I spawned on top of a 200 block tall mountain surrounded by small islands of gravel". Seeds were shared for landscape rather then structure generation.
That's because there was no structure generation before 1.8.. So sharing seeds for land generation was all you could do back then.
but to clear it up the biome's are nice except for the swamp biome's, good for wood collecting but just so buggy it goes in the river biome and swamp water, and the grass is not nice and green and the swamp looks very ugly if you would of looked at it from a bird's-eye view, really Mojang you ruined seeds.
I first started minecraft in 1.7.3 Now, that is pretty long, as that was the same update for five months. I started in August. I was so upset at how the land changed so drasticly, I don't even play survival anymore because of how boring the landscape is. I would like the old 1.7 terrain generator. But, I agree that the one right now needs to be changed much.
After all, Think about it this way,
