I remember when I bought this game when it was officially released, my first world had an extreme hills biome that blew my mind. It was in the shape of a crescent moon, huge hills, and in the middle was a lake with yet another smaller hill in the middle of this lake. I accidentally erased it and now I miss it. Would be nice to see something like this again, terra-forming in survival is hard work!

I regret to inform you that r1.0.0 had the predictable terrain generator we speak of here.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

Interpret my message as 'I would like to see more of this than trying to find it through tiring seeds.' Is it loud and clear?
What this thread is trying to say is that these amazing mountain structures (almost always) only spawn in Beta 1.8 and earlier; extreme hills aren't so epic and are very dry, barely any trees, and lack of variation.
However, variation of terrain is easier said than done.

I just think we need to prevent biomes from following strict, unchanging blueprints and start to mix and match. It would create lots of possibilities and help with variety. Tree density has also been noted as a problem, so that could be made to vary as well. In fact, making every single generated aspect of a world be able to deviate and borrow aspects would be a big step in the right direction.
I love the current terrain generation of minecraft, so no thank you.
The only thing that should be is more biome-specific features and generated structures.
Ill tell you this.:
If there will be extreme hills and overhangs formed everywhere, they wont be a special thing anymore. it will become too much of a usual sight, ruining much of the minecraft experience. think about this: if pink sheeps would spawn everywhere, people wont be excited when they find a natural pink sheep. same thing with overhangs.
We allready have awesome ovehangs in the current generation, and the fact they are not common makes it much more exciting to find one!

Want extreme terrain in any biome?
play an amplified world.
Amplified worlds do not fully solve this problem. The thing I don't like about amplified worlds is that there are literally. mountains. EVERYWHERE. I mean really, you can't go past several chunks without seeing a huge mountain.
I have a world set on amplified in which I just travel endlessly in one direction in survival, and it's really painful to cross the mountains. I constantly run into mountains that are impossible to climb without mining through it or pillaring, and it takes me super long to cross a few hundred blocks. They really need to smoothen those mountains. There needs to be variation between flat terrain, hilly terrain, and cliffy terrain.

To me that's the point of "amplified" except when the mountains block you

Plsease see the post i made above you post.
Overhangs and extreme cliffs SHOULD be an uncommon thing to make it exciting to find one.
Yeah, I remembered the first time I found a monster spawner, the woods behind my house, and the good ole snow tundra I was in.
But now every monster spawner is in some sort of ant colony and it's like "Oh hey."

My Avatar is a Dalek, therefor your argument is... EXTERMINATED!!!
You know who can tell me something I already know? Me. All the time. I'm really good at telling me stuff I already know. I don't need help in that department. I don't know about others, but I can't imagine I'm alone here.

I personally like seeing huge mountains everywhere because it gives a sense of "awe"
Just because they are not everywhere.
if youll see them everywhere a million times the sense of awe will decrease.

My best suggestion:
Mobs actually being varied???
