Thirdly, but not the most important, I don't think it should be pitch black. I think it should be more along the lines of one or two layers from complete darkness. View this scale:
There's a reason it's the Abyss; you can't see without your own light. The effect isn't complete if you can see things outside of your safety zone, even if you can only see it a little.
It starts out like a dream world does it... Interesting.
Well, more like a nightmare world. I was trying to figure a good topic name, and was tossing between nightmares and darkness. I think it's rather appropriate.
Also as a way to kill the leviathan and to provide need to go down the abyss's, how about a block that spawns at the bottom in the walls, that is super effective against abyssal mobs?

Ooh. That's actually a pretty good idea. I like that.

Cool. though abbys walls shouldn't be completely smooth, they should have some outcroppings to allow you to
1.Maybe survive a fall from the top
2. Allow mining.

Yeah, I didn't want them to be completely smooth, but not too easy to avoid dying in.
If you had models of the creatures already I could texture it... I can't mod though.
I don't know Java, although I do know some other languages. The mobs aren't as important, though. Mainly block textures, a black torch, all pitch black block with slightly lighter edges, gravel that's mainly black with some lighter gray, a black swirly spirally thingy, a blue version of that last thingy; so I could make an example portal.
Maybe I should learn Java, but I dunno, I'm pretty lazy.

I might try making those, and you or I could input them into a normal terrain.png for you to show them the images.
I don't think that the Abyss should be a place of dim light and mobs that can be killed in one hit with weapons that deal massive damage. It should be a place where you feel truly endangered no matter what you do. Deadly mobs that spawn in places you can't see and never show their faces are many, many times scarier than mobs that run into your face in plain view and deck you with a two-by-four. Furthermore, by giving a tenuous way to keep the deadly mobs at bay, there is a value placed upon light. Every torch becomes precious.

I can give those textures a shot. I've never done serious texturing before, but I've played around with it. I'll do it with colored wool for now.

Not only that, you have to start thinking about torch placement, no more having torches placed supper close together, you'll want to have them as far apart as you can, but still have the place in the center lit up so that they don't spawn.

That's what I like about it.
I thank you for your input.
Eclipsing Rock would be rare, and you'd have to venture into a chasm to get it. Using it for another purpose than making the Leviathan killable would be stupid as it would only buy you slightly more time. They're one time use, so it's not like you'd be continuously safe. They'd be a last resort sort of thing.
The only mobs you really end up seeing are the ones that try to take your safety away.
Also, i'm on your side about the dim light; I want it to be pitch black so you can't see.
You could change these mobs from being mobs that chase you into the light and despawn, to mobs that stay at the edge of the light, as though it were a wall, and wait for you to come out.

Edited the deadly mobs to teleport out of light to the edge of it, and wait and watch you while you're in it.

I was more referring to the idea of some sort of anti-Abyss material. The Eclipsing Rock idea seems pretty neat, in fact.
Anyhow I've slapped some textures together and will try to get some screenshots in a bit.

Are you going to offer any way to improve?

I am going to put that in my signature as a quote. That's epic.
Glad you think so!
Added Dark Mist to the block descriptions.

Although, more deadly mobs may be in order. Hmm.
