If you stare into the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back at you.
Humans have an instinctive fear of the dark. The fear is embedded into our being, and for good reason too - Although less important in the modern world, you truly never know what is lurking in the shadows. The Abyss builds upon this fear.
Introduction:
The Abyss possesses no natural light, and unlike the End, the blocks are not dimly lit - No matter where you go, all you will see is pitch black darkness. The only way to see, is to bring your own light source, but, even then, the Abyss will halve the light output of anything inside it. The Abyss automatically turns any lava placed in it into Obsidian, automatically turns water into Ice(With enough light the water remains), and limits the distance light can reach by a lot. Torches inside the Abyss will automatically burn out after a while, and require themselves to be re-lit using a Flint & Steel. Better light sources would be good to stock up on.
Terrain:
The terrain of the Abyss consists mainly of low, very flat ground, with occasional spires reaching up towards the black sky, and somewhat frequent bottomless chasms that you won't even see if you're not careful. The ambiance of the Abyss includes the occasional distant screech and echo. Special blocks:
-Abyssal Stone: The main block the world is made of. Can only be mined with a diamond or gold pickaxe and takes 2 seconds to do so. Has a black/dark grey grainy texture. Has low blast resistance. -Onyx: The pitch black, shiny gemstone known as Onyx is the Abyss' diamond. Can only be found rarely near the tips of the Abyssal spires. Completely black on all 6 sides. Can only be mined with a diamond pickaxe. Can be crafted with Black Mist to create Darkness Onyx. This can be crafted with any tool to completely repair it and double its effectiveness and durability, but any tool may only have this done to it once. -Eclipsing Rock: This strange block appears only near the bottom of the natural chasm walls. It absorbs all light that falls upon it, turning from a pitch black to a bright white, but emits no light even after it's absorbed it. Honestly not sure about a good look for this stone... Destroying this block(By right-clicking it) after it becomes white causes an extremely bright flash of white to spread out. This flash of light that it emits deals 50 hearts of damage to Abyssal mobs in a wide radius and stun them as well. Can be used in other dimensions, but non-Abyssal mobs will only be stunned(Zombies and Skeletons will be set on fire, however). While mining doesn't 'destroy' it and it keeps its state, right-clicking actually removes the block from existence, so each block only nets you one use. -Black Mist: A transparent black block, left behind by Abyssal Misters as they move. Completely invisible in the dark and let you move through them, but damage you for 2 hearts a second while you're in them. You can use a bottle to contain it and place it somewhere else. -Shimmerstone: A black block with flecks all over it. These flecks are anywhere from black to bright white depending on your viewing angle from the stone. The shimmer can be seen from far away, even in the dark. Occurs in random deposits and some structures in the Abyss. -Abyssal Brick: A brick formed from Abyssal Stone. Occurs in some structures of the Abyss. -Abyssal Pillar: A pillar formed from Abyssal Stone. Occurs in some structures of the Abyss. -Black Tar: A deadly, sticky substance found in the Abyss rarely. If fallen into, will slowly suck you in and eventually suffocate you. Can be collected with a shovel.
Vegetation:
The Abyss is mostly barren, but you can find an occasional gray dead tree, as well as a Glow Cap, which is a small green-blue mushroom that gives off a light level of 3.5(In the Abyss, 7 in the overworld) and can be crafted into a single Glowstone Dust. Unlike other light sources, Abyss mobs will completely ignore Glow Caps, so they can be a valuable resource. The dead trees you find have a 25% chance of dropping charcoal instead of wood, making them a good source of emergency torches. Nightshade can also be found infrequently. Once picked, it can be eaten, but will kill you. Can be brewed into Lethal Potion and Lethal Splash Potion.
Enemies:
The Abyss has two tiers of enemies: Weaker enemies enemies that spawn around lit areas and try to destroy your light sources; and strong, deadly enemies that only spawn around the player when s/he is in complete darkness. Enemies will not spawn in lit areas at all. In short, deadly enemies that can only get you from the dark are assisted by weaker enemies that try to destroy your light sources.
Enemies will not spawn all the time. There will be times of slack where it would even be safe to quickly run through the darkness.
If an enemy destroys a torch, it will be snuffed out and require a relight, and if they destroy a Glowstone, it will drop Glowstone Dust instead of Glowstone.
If an Abyss enemy is lit on fire, other Abyss enemies will attack it, making a Flint & Steel a valuable weapon. The mobs:
-Abyssal Sprinter:
1 health, does not attack you. This Abyss mob spawns in small groups that run straight for your light sources. They're very fast and need to be dealt with quickly. Small humanoid form. -Abyssal Creeper:
10 health. This Abyss mob is basically a creeper, but cancels its explosion if attacked. Will run towards light sources and explode to destroy them, and will explode to destroy obstructions. Black, faceless creeper. -Abyssal Mister:
5 health. Does not attack. Strangely enough, a passive-ish Abyssal mob. Moves around and leaves Black Mist behind it as it moves. Small black headless sheep-like form. -Banshee:
20 health. Runs very fast on all fours. Spawns naturally throughout the darkness and doesn't care about light. Getting too close will make it stand up and screech at you, stunning you, and then it will start running at you. Take it out from a distance to be the safest. -Abyssal Zeppelin:
5 health. Floating enemy, will go for light sources other enemies can't reach. Rarely spawns holding an Abyssal Creeper that it drops and lets explode on impact. Small blimp-like body. Sometimes floats in circles around spires and attacks you while you try to climb. -Abyssal Crawler:
12 health. A spider-like enemy, spawns on the walls of chasms and on spires. Can move up and down vertically very quickly, but moves very slowly horizontally. Can detect you immediately from any vertical distance, horizontal sight is limited. Spider-like in form, but with no head and only 4 legs. -Abyssal Spectre:
28 health. A higher tier Abyss enemy that can strike even when you're in a lit area, but chooses to do so only when you're in an area that no other enemies can get to, such as a mined-out cave. Floats through the air and completely ignores collisions - that is to say, it can move through any block or entity. Will only spawn inside Abyssal Stone, where at least 2x2x3 space is available, and next to a space that should be filled by Abyssal Stone but isn't. Ghost-type enemy. -Abyssal Leviathan:
3000 health. Deals 6 hearts of damage per hit. This is one of three mobs that will only strike in the dark. Identifiable from the Angler fish style lure. Its body is of a flying serpentine form. Teleports to the edge of a lit area if it's in one, waits and watches you as though it were a wall. This cannot take damage until you damage it with an Eclipsing Rock. After that, it will behave as a boss, similar to the Enderdragon. When killed, gives a large amount of EXP and a number of Onyx with a couple of Diamonds. -Abyssal Hunter:
50 health. Deals 4 hearts of damage per hit. This is one of three mobs that will only strike in the dark. Teleports to the edge of a lit area if it's in one, waits and watches you as though it were a wall. Identifiable from three glowing eyes. Spawns in groups of 4 on all sides of you. -Reaper:
150 health. Deals 2 hearts of damage per hit. This is the last of three mobs that only strike in the dark. Teleports to the edge of a lit area if it's in one, waits and watches you as though it were a wall. Identifiable from a single red glowing eye. Will follow you around, striking every 2 seconds.
Structures:
-Tar Pit: A basin in the Abyss filled with Black Tar. This can be your death if you're not wary. -Leviathan Statue: A statue of the Abyssal Leviathan made of Shimmerstone, some falling apart. Fairly rare. -Abyssal Altar: A small ruins occasionally found in the Abyss made up of Abyssal Brick and Pillar, may contain a glowing Abyssal Stone or Onyx.
Entering:
Like the Sky Dimension, this realm may occasionally be entered when you sleep. However, the first time you enter, you won't have a way to manually return. To prevent immediate death, a lone torch is automatically placed on your entry point. After 10 minutes have passed, you'll wake up with whatever items you had, and whatever items you obtained. If you mined Abyssal Stone, you can craft Abyssal Torches, place them in a circle(In the Overworld only), and a portal to the Abyss will be formed. This cancels out their individual effects of each, and creates a pitch black swirling circle in the middle of them. Entering this portal creates a portal to the Overworld in the Abyss, which looks almost exactly the same, but with regular torches surrounding a bluish circle(Note: You cannot create portals in the Abyss in this manner, similar to the End. The portal must be formed by entering from the Overworld). The torches making that cannot be broken, and they give off a light level of 15, which is not halved by the Abyss' effect. However, the distance light reaches is still limited.
Rewards:
In addition to Onyx, Eclipsing Rock, and Black Mist, rewards of the Abyss include high EXP from mobs and Enchant Scrolls that contain specific enchants on them. These scrolls can be used on an appropriate item using an Enchantment Table to give that enchant to it. Rarely, you may find an otherwise normal Abysmal Stone that gives off a faint blue glow. By right-clicking this with paper, the stone will lose its blue glow, and convert the paper into an Enchant Scroll. If you try mining a glowing stone, it'll turn into a regular Abysmal Stone in the inventory, unless you use a Silk Touch Diamond pickaxe. Monsters here will also occasionally drop the scrolls.
Strong enemies that spawn in the dark but are assisted by weaker ones bent on spreading it. Bottomless holes to fall into and a great reward for mob trap makers. Enchant scrolls seem awesome. Although where do they come from?
Aside from that this seems awesome.

This is a signature. There should be something here....
Oh wait! There is!
Sounds pretty darn good. It feels like what The End could've been.
What sorts of stats are we talking about for the mobs?
Thanks!
Well, given the fact that the stronger enemies are supposed to be the death of you; extremely high HP and probably give 3~7 hearts of damage a hit, so if they do get to you, you have just a small amount of time to make light again. The weaker enemies would have much less HP and do barely any damage, since their goal is to destroy the light, not you.
This is AWESOME, but I think absolute darkness is a bit exaggerated. I think that a light level of 2 or 3 (the moon gives a light level of 4) is necessary. But I fully support this
I really like this. I was expecting another "IT'S LIKE THE NETHER BUT DARK AND EDGY" or "IT'S LIKE THE OVERWORLD BUT DARK AND TWISTED" post, but this was a really nice idea.
Abysmal Stone only being mined by a diamond pick seems a bit off, seeing as it's the primary stone of the dimension. An iron or gold pickaxe would be better, in my opinion. I like the general idea behind Onyx, but perhaps it could be a little less powerful. Maybe it could only repairs items, unless refined (through smelting or crafting it with something else), then it gets the enhancement properties.
That's funny because I was originally going to make a comparison between the Nether and the Abyss, the Nether being a place of fire and evil, and the Abyss being a place of darkness and nightmares.
I didn't want people to be able to easily make a little fort in the ground to protect themselves, but didn't want to make the stone unbreakable. I'm not entirely sure how to do it well; perhaps a good way would to make it only minable with Gold or Diamond pickaxes.
Perhaps Onyx could crafted together with a Diamond, to gain enhancement abilities.
This is AWESOME, but I think absolute darkness is a bit exaggerated. I think that a light level of 2 or 3 (the moon gives a light level of 4) is necessary. But I fully support this
Well, I wanted the Abyss to be extremely dark. I didn't want you to be able to see past your little light bubble of safety.
Edit: Edited first post, now includes enemy descriptions.

No. The whole point of the Abyss is complete darkness and evil things lurking beyond your "little light bubble of safety". Being able to see will completely ruin it.
And I also think that the bottomless chasms should extend down THROUGH bedrock and have smooth sides, so it means definite death. But instead of randomly forming, the Onyx would be found lining the walls of the lower layers.
But that would be too easy! The monsters can't follow you down, and you happily sit there on a staircase mining your precious mineral. So I suggest a new mob: the Abysmal Crawler.
Abysmal Crawlers are like spiders, but with only four legs. They spawn on chasm walls regardless of light level. And they can climb real fast! Unfortunately, they crawl on flat land real slow. They will sometimes climb above you and drop a silk string, which will wind around your neck and "suffocate" you. You have to remove this with shears. When dead, they drop lassos, which can be thrown at all Overworld mobs to tow them. However, they have durability and the drops will often fall into the Void. They have 5 hearts and deal 3 damage when attacking, and 1 damage per second when suffocating you.
So, happy mining!

I haven't even bought MineCraft, I don't have the money...
this sound like a mod idea more than a Minecraft Suggest...
dont get me wrong...the idea is awesome...but Jeb already said they need improve the actual dimensions before even thinking on making another, the Nether and the End (specially the End) need a lot more development
please you must convince a good modder to make the Abyss a reality
And we're getting a new one soon; they're readding the Sky Dimension as its own dimension. It's already established that any Minecraft World is multidimensional. The trouble is that there are only so many niches a dimension can occupy before getting repetitive. We have Hell, Limbo, Sky; space left over for Frost, Abyss, Ruins, Void, Ocean.
I'm still rather weary of new dimensions. People keep wanting millions of dimensions and it's just annoying to see so many.
I think you should cut back on the mobs. Two would be the least amount you could have without being excessive and four is probably the most. Limiting the number of mobs there to three cuts back on "HOLY FRIGGING CRAP I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO LIVE, I'M SURROUNDED BY SO MANY DIFFERENT MOBS!" Especially if it's dark
Thirdly, but not the most important, I don't think it should be pitch black. I think it should be more along the lines of one or two layers from complete darkness. View this scale:

They wouldn't all be spawning at once; different mobs are in different places and have different conditions to spawn. Obviously a mob amount limiter could be set in place.

Hmm. Perhaps that could be done. I like the Abyssal Crawler, I actually considered using that for a name. They could also be present on the spires. Though, I wouldn't want a bunch of Onyx down there. Perhaps another type of stone?
