So far the only mods you can have on multiplayer without having the person to download mods to play on the server are mods that don't add new items or mobs, but change existing stuff. I'm saying this should be changed to a way that a modded server does not requier the player to download said mod. How this would work is that the server keeps the mod information on it and the player just quickly accesses it and temporaraly downloads whats needed to be downloaded, without having to manually download it. (I am not a coder, so some of my information could be wrong.) This way it would be even easier to play on modded servers!
I'm not sure how easily this would work, especially with the game having to modify an "in use" file (your JAR) on the fly like that. Would be a really cool thing to have though.

Kinda like how the Texture packs are going to work?
That'd be cool!
I have no idea how the texture packs are gonna work, is it like ther server forces a texture for you? Or are you talking about easily downloading then?

Easily Downloading them. If you click no, Then you'll have a very...Buggy experience, (Invisible People if they're wearing armor thats modded, Dark Grayish Blocks, And the occasional "Chunk Error"
It should be similar to the loading screen for Steam games (Or perhaps it's just Valve games, I've only seen it on those.) where it downloads the mods, but it only uses them for that server.

Ah, so it could be "This server has mods of it, do you want to quickdownload?" wich will download mods, but only run it on the server, and not any other server/single player.

Right!
And just like the Texture Packs, You'd have an Option in the option menus to be asked to download them.

So if some servers require you to use a texture pack, you could just temporaraly download it for the server. Wow, this would fix people using X-ray textures.

Well, Kinda, I'm pretty sure you'll still be able to swap texture packs in the server with optifine.
Well, I'm pretty sure that with the combination of the SP/MP merge and the mod API, there is a good chance of this happening. Also, to prevent cheating, a new message:
You may not join this server as you have mods non existing on the server.
If you have a modified jar that doesn't match the server's, it should display this.

That would sure take a toll of people griefing/flying when they use mods to do it.

What's up? I'm the proud co-owner of a little ClassiCube server called Minebuild.

Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.
