This is when a guy comes and makes up a dumb backstory that's so pitiful it just almost doesn't make you cry.

For generally inferior suggestions, how about "add (an option for) Beta generation!" or any compromises involving Beta generation and r1.8 generation?
While the suggestion in and of itself is not bad, it generally starts a mini war of nostalgia, weird optimism, nonsensical logic, and invalid comparisons. All of the points brought up for either side have all been heard before, and it generally leads to a lot of 'Excuses You Shouldn't Use' by both 'sides' of the argument.
It basically just leaves a lot of people mad and accomplishes nothing.

Way to be discreet about which thread you're talking about... lol
You're spot on in your thinking, and I agree with you completely. However, like you said, that does not make the suggestion itself a bad one. And that's it. People are letting their nostalgia blind them. That's their problem. If anything, you should be reminding people who post on those type of threads to stay on topic and talk about the suggestion. And I believe that remaining relevant to the topic is in the OP of this very thread.
But again, pressing the back button after reading their OP can solve all of your problems.

That was one of three current threads I was referencing. Alongside several I've seen in the past. They're all the same. Regardless of how much you try to bring it back on track, it quickly... devolves. Doesn't matter how many new people join. In fact, new people make it worse because new people don't read any of the ten to twenty pages of discussion to determine whether or not what they've said has already been said. They start the argument all over again, and then the threads just... won't... die. They're like hatred weeds.
Nostalgia has nothing to do with it. People have said time and time again that that's not it, and I for one am inclined to believe them. "Nostalgia-blind" is just another argument you shouldn't use, simply because it's not true.
It's hard to do anything against these because technically all the insanity I described as being in those threads is not off-topic. Technically. It makes people mad and accomplishes nothing, but the many repetitive arguments are all technically on-topic.
As for your last sentence, "don't like don't read" is not a valid suggestion regardless of how you suggest it or what you're suggesting it for.
Well, there's a nice nift button called report, just incase things get out of hand or flame wars.

It seems like we're in agreement up until my thoughts about staying on topic... And you're right about the technicalities you mention. They are indeed, technically, on topic and, technically, valid discussions. I also agree with you in your first paragraph, particularly when threads tend to devolve when anything Beta is mentioned. (ok, they almost always fall apart) The owners of these threads should be keeping the OP up to date with relatively fresh discussion as to prevent any recycling of debate.
But I'm going to reiterate my point. It is their problem that they are letting their emotions get the best of them. It is their problem that they do not know how to keep a suggestion topic healthy and thriving, despite it being about some aspect about a previous version. (namely Beta) And while I disagree about the details that you bring up about nostalgia, it's not relevant to my primary idea. My primary thought is that for whatever reason, something about Beta seems to make some people throw their rational intellect out the window only to leave their base emotions crying inside. This flies in the face of the very purpose of a suggestions thread.
So I maintain my position, threads involving a compromise between Beta features and current features should not be considered inferior suggestions.
And one last thing... a quote from my previous post. "...pressing the back button after reading their OP can solve all of your problems." If you feel like your contribution will be brushed aside, then the back button is your best friend since it will shield you from all issues that rise from a poorly maintained thread.
Nostalgia-blind is a big problem; but more-so for critics than for suggesters.
In terms of suggesters, the big problem comes with the idea of "going back" - Mojang, among its myriad other qualities, doesn't do something without a great deal of thought into their motives. It's not because they're afraid of community backlash or other related PR problems (trust me, while Minecraft is as globally popular as it is now, they don't need PR; they could perform PR-suicide and still not see a dip in their profits because the train's running so hard right now.) They are meticulous about what they add or what they don't; holding long congresses about their decisions.
This means that if they have removed a "desirable" feature, they're not going to cave to player demands and add it back (they haven't before, they won't start now).
This is a major flaw people seem to have when suggesting any topic. "If enough people show support on an idea, mojang will see and add it!" - No, they won't do diddly-jack to the idea unless it aligns with their motives. History has shown this, and expecting them to fundamentally change how they do business is Einstein's definition of insanity. No means no; except in the case when Mojang says no, where no means "stop asking".

This is more about preventing such a calamity, but yes, the report button is a great fire extinguisher.
Sure, the OP should be updated, but it is never updated. Idealism is cool and all, but realism is what we're working with here. And trying to get the original poster to do anything about it is a lost cause. They leave after twenty pages.
Like you said, it flies in the face of the purpose of a suggestions thread. So why are we allowing it to be suggested? It never works out as a rational endeavor. We don't let vague, redundant, or wishlist threads to pop up, so why are we allowing obvious hatred sparks to pop up? Even if the mods don't do anything about it, I still feel it should be in this guide, since there is a section for this very purpose.
Not inferior. 'Generally hated.'
Like I said in my post, that kind of thinking is invalid. We should not simply ignore problems that do not apply to us. They are still problems.
The report button does nothing to quell these. They're not technically against the rules, any more than most of the 'generally hated/inferior' suggestions are against the rules.
Perhaps I should make the next Beta generation compromise thread and actually do it intelligently knowing what I'm getting into.

The voice of reason once again, well said. I suppose this is what players like Chameleon are trying to say, more or less. While threads with compromises aren't technically against the rules, they simply wont be implemented no matter how much popularity the suggestion has due to Mojang's agenda.

I think that Yoshi has summed up the case against such threads nicely. (And not to mention in a more thoughtful manner, but that's besides the point.) It's not that they are bad suggestions, it's that Mojang (now Microsoft) carefully implements new features and surgically removes old features.
Instead of reasoning that these type of threads should not be allowed because of their "unpopularity," it should be said that these kind of threads should not be allowed because Mojang has their reasons for leaving previous features.
If anything, for both critics and suggesters alike, there should be a point about conducting civil and courteous discussion... oh wait, that's in the rules.

Yeah, they aren't bad suggestions for their content. I'm not against these threads existing outright; I'm not looking for a rules change. I am against what these threads cause because both the suggester and critics don't seem to have any idea how to react to them. At the very least, if it were given a mention in this thread, anyone who actually reads it knows what they're getting into.
Or maybe just add Beta Generation as an example under "Presentations You Need To Avoid" under "Don't suggest what's been removed from the game."
I'm just going to point out that the current forum population is 3.291 million. If 99.9% read this thread and FTC, there'd still be over 3 thousand people that haven't. They become truly a vocal minority. Participation in this thread or FTC isn't (and shouldn't be) mandatory. The fact that even 10% of the forum population even glosses what's written here (or what comes out of the wordhole of that smarmy jerk that made FTC) is great. 85K views for this thread, 53K for mine. Consider now, that there's 1 million posts in the suggestions forum. Of those, there's 90,000 threads. I'd say we hit a good mark.
Views/Threads is 94% for this thread. Views/Thread is 59% for FTC. Again, I'm thoroughly humbled; I can only imagine that Theriasis and crew are as well.
There's a point to this somewhere... Oh, yes! Expecting total conformity to this suggestion or FTC is a fool's errand; and the community at large shouldn't be judged by the decidedly few that haven't read this or the under half that haven't read FTC.
