I was thinking that i had too many furnaces and too much iron lying around and i thought why not have better furnaces. each iron furnace would have an extra slot for items to smelt and for the finished product.
Also one fuel slot would apply to both ingredients. For example i could have 1 coal and 16 cobblestone and smelt all 16 blocks of cobblestone into stone if i put 8 blocks in each slot. so you could smelt twice as much for the same amount of fuel. obsidian furnaces would be even better because they would have 3 slots for items to smelt and for the finished product. In an obsidian furnace i could smelt 24 blocks of cobblestone into stone if i broke up the cobble ito 3 stacks of 8 and put one in each spot. To craft an iron furnace you would put a regulaur furnace in the middle of a 3X3 crafting square and surround it in iron ingots. To make an obsidian furnace put an iron furnace in the middle of a 3X3 crafting square and surround it in obsidian.
I can appreciate that you want to add stronger furnaces, but from a realistic, mechanical perspective, Iron would make a terrible furnace. In fact brick furnaces would be much better than Iron furnaces and a lot more realistic. But even then, a stone furnace would be even better than a brick furnace. I know that in terms of scarcity or material tiers that an Iron Furnace would be harder to obtain, but mechanically it doesn't add up. Obsidian I'm not so sure about, but my gut tells me that it would absorb a lot of the heat and you would ideally want an oven to reflect the heat back into whatever your smelting.
Looking at the game mechanics you propose, correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't really alter the game any. Sure, your using fuel more efficiently, and sure you don't have to make multiple stone furnaces, but with the addition of charcoal, coal conservation isn't a large issue and it would still take the same amount of time to smelt the cobble in one iron furnace as it would in 2 stone ones. You may want to consider revising the mechanics to make it a time saver, but even then, most people who smelt in single player can just minimize the window and do other things or just do other things on a server when there are other players keeping your chunk active.
What it boils down to is your giving a use for Iron, which I think Iron has plenty of uses already, and your adding new furnace mechanics which provide minor convinces but in the end doesn't solve problems that currently exist. It's a nice thought and you presented it reasonably, but I think our attention and support is better placed elsewhere.
Maybe a brick furnace with more efficient, faster smelting with another slot. That would make more sense, and be a better addition. It would be crafted like a normal furnace, except with brick blocks instead of cobblestone.

Yes, lose iron and obsidian and make it a brick furnace and you may have a survivable idea. But what you really need is an unique and useful game mechanic other than faster, capacity, or fuel efficiency to make it shine; the rebar that reinforces your concrete.
It's been brought up in other threads that, for example, the the ability to smelt and cook should be separated into different device blocks. The stone furnace would probably be best suited for smelting and a brick oven would make the most sense to become the cooking device block.
What if iron furnaces smelted faster, but deterioated over time? That probably doesn't make sense, either. Oh well.
Or perhaps just to make the multiple furnaces thing less obnoxious, conjoined furnaces, like chests. Personally, my only objection to doing it is I always forget what's in which furnace so I always need to check all of them. If it were all in one window it'd solve my only real furnace woe. As far as fuel conservation goes, perhaps some mechanic allowing you to use a single coal stack for multiple materials in the large furnace. No idea how to balance that well.
I do like the idea of specialized brick ovens for cooking, though. Maybe it could let you cook with wood without turning it into charcoal? Or stone furnaces could have a small chance to burn food.
