TNT cannons are too expensive to actually use. I think you should be able to launch a primed TNT decently far with 1 or 2 TNT explosions behind it. To do this, simply add more knockback from explosions to entities. If a creeper blows up on someone, it hits him far back. TNT would launch the player even further. This could save you from more TNT or shoot you off a cliff.
NOTE: I don't want more damage from explosions, just more (realistic) knockback.
Yeah, and I think there is already a little bit of knockback. They could probably change it just by editing one integer in the code.
No, sorry, but it would definitely take more than changing an integer. It wouldn't be that hard, but knockback wouldn't be very realistic if all it was was distance backward. Normal knockback follows a parabolic path.
