If you enjoy enchanting, please read on. If you cannot stand enchanting or reading get out because we don't want you here.
So lately I've been thinking quite a bit about nice things to add to Minecraft, and I really enjoy enchanting things, So I thought a bit about that. Then I came up with an idea that largely relies on enchanting to work. I thought enough about this feature so that I knew how it would fit into the game without being overpowered. Here's what I came up with:
This item would not be called "Magic Dagger" in-game. I use that as a placeholder for what they really are, which are enchanted Obsidian Daggers.
Now before you start Nay-saying let me explain the basics in lamens terms:
-Obsidian daggers are crafted using 1 Gold ingot, and one Obsidian. -Obsidian daggers deal a base damage of 3. (1 and a half hearts) -Obsidian daggers are One use! -Obsidian daggers can be thrown. -Obsidian daggers Do not stack. -Obsidian daggers are poisonable.
Before you freak out and spam the comments with: "OVERPOWERED!" "1 Obby and one gold? Y!?" or "USELESS". Read on.
Here's a pretty simple FAQ'ish thing I have devised to weed out your questions, if it does not answer them... Feel free to comment.
"Why use obsidian and gold?"- Gold is magical in the Minecraft universe, it has the highest enchantability. I chose obsidian so that it only had one tier.
"Why only one of each?"- Daggers obviously are short, so only two parts of the crafting grid are needed. And if you mean "Isn't that cheap?" no because they are relatively useless without magic.
"A base damage of 3 seems a bit... Weak why that?"- I don't intend for the daggers to be useful unless they have imbued magic.
"You said 'Magic Daggers' I don't understand"- Enchanting is magic, Enchanting + Daggers = Magic Daggers.
"Magical-Poison daggers are OP"- I agree, that is why you can't do both.
"One use!?"- Yeah, these are supposed to be like power-attacks, and there is an enchantment to amplify the usage.
Now that that is out of the way...
[Functionality]:
The daggers are used as a melee item, but can only hit a target that is very close to you, so you will need to be close, otherwise you can try your luck throwing it, but you can miss easily if not aimed carefully. The daggers will break once they have used up 1 durability point unless they possess the "Unbreaking" enchantment. Enchantments are the necessary ingredient for making your dagger useful. Enchantments are listed below:
[Penetration] This enchantment would ignore the armor points of the target by %20, and deal an additional 3 damage per tier. (4 tiers)
[Freeze] This enchantment would freeze the target in ice for 3 seconds and an additional 1 per tier. (3 tiers)
[Ignite] This enchantment would set fire to the target for 3 seconds, and an additional 2 per tier. (3 tiers)
[Precision] This enchantment would increase the speed that the dagger flies when thrown. (3 tiers)
[Unbreaking] This enchantment would grant an additional use per tier. (4 tiers)
[Vampirism] This enchantment would steal the damage done to target. (1 Tier)
Obviously certain enchantments would not coincide, such as Freeze and Ignite, or Precision and Unbreaking, but you get the point. (Dagger pun... Lol)
Then as I stated before, poisoning would be an option, you can apply any potion to the dagger, rendering it unenchantable, but would instead show the effect of the potion when you scroll over the dagger. Only one potion could be applied. This wouldn't be useless because it would administer the full effect of the potion on the target, for the full duration (Unlike splash potions).
Thats pretty much all there is to it and I don't feel like adding more at the moment, so please leave feedback.
Seems nice. But I wouldn't prefer this to be added to the game. How about the daggers have a few uses, but you HAVE to go and pick it up. So like you could use it 10-25 times, but you would have to go get it each time.

That seems logical. But how do I know you are not a creeper...
A disposable melee weapon that can deal damage based on how big of an investment it was to enchant.
However, you might get a loooooot of flame from this forum by having the title "Magical Daggers", as
both daggers and enchantments are frequently suggested things. I suggest renaming them "Blackjacks"
which are IRL a sort of small club with blunted spikes used for instantly disarming unsuspecting people.
Keep in mind that the flamers are being ignorant and did not read the post through, nor did they examine
the initial concept before judging the superficial name "magic dagger".

That is the most coherent thing I have ever heard. Thank-you.
Seems like they would be far to costly exp wise for them to be actively used outside of hardcore pvp map where they were given to you.
Perhaps it would be more balanced if it took half as many levels as it would to enchant another item. I.E. the max enchantment would be at 25 levels, not 50.

I like this idea. I was thinking add lapis to the recipe,(inlay in the hilt?) as that would make a reason to hunt for it, and is kind of "magical"
This is a great idea and would add a lot more to combat than just - see monster, slash with sword.

...that breaks in 1 hit.
Poisoning is fine (I would use a splash potion instead but applying the potion to a dagger would make it more unpredictable in PVP) as it is.
Look at my profile picture. I am a wolf.

yeha, i luv dis idea
Yeah, this is a pretty good idea. I like the way it's laid out. I'm not sure if it fits in the real minecraft though.
