Enchantments, currently, are very boring. In terms of the visual effects, there are next to none except the sword extra damage particles and the flame enchantment flaming arrows. This suggestion also includes a few changes to the way that the Knockback, Looting, Power, and Punch enchantments work. To avoid horrible lag, these enchantment visual effects will not change if hacked past the normal level. The enchantments will still work as they would at the higher level. There will be a setting in Options to enable or disable these effects (for those with faster/slower computers).
Let's start off with sword enchantments:
Sharpness: The blade of the sword constantly emits yellow star/shine particles that are brighter yellow the higher the level. The particles start out small, grow larger and then shrink and vanish in a period of 1 second.
Smite: When an undead enemy is struck by a sword with this enchantment, it will crackle with white/yellow lightning. Idea by AnonTheMouse.
Bane of Arthropods: Same as Smite, but purple and for arthropods. Idea by AnonTheMouse.
Fire Aspect: Fire particles constantly whirl around the sword's blade, there are twice as many particles at level II then at I.
Looting: Any mob struck by a sword with this enchantment (Only mobs that drop items) will emit the same star/shine particles from Sharpness, but they will be green/blue instead. The items will glow when dropped, as will the experience orbs. Mobs killed by Looting will now drop 2x more experience for Looting I, 3x more for Looting II, and 4x more for Looting III.
Knockback: Boom! Knockback now causes an explosion (or chain of explosions for levels II and III) when striking a mob. Explosions from Knockback do not cause damage to terrain nor do they cause extra damage. Knockback can also now get to level III naturally. These explosions will knock back all mobs within their radius.
Now onto tool enchantments:
Efficiency: Like Sharpness, the two sides of the pickaxe, the tip of the shovel, or the blade of the axe will emit yellow star/shine particles, becoming brighter in color the higher the level.
Unbreaking: Whenever a use is blocked from being used, the tool will emit blue particles for a short moment.
Fortune: Whenever a block which Fortune can be used on is being broken, a blue beam of light from the end of the tool will be fired at the block.
Silk Touch: Whenever a block's drop is changed by this enchantment, the block, when broken, will appear to drop its normal drop first, which will then glow blue and change into the new drop. This effect does not happen for Glass, Glass Panes, and Ice.
Next, bow enchantments:
Punch: Same effect as Knockback, also can get to level III now.
Power: The arrow will fly faster and further now with higher level, and will appear to distort the air that it flies through, with more distortion at higher levels. This is probably one of my favorite effects.
Flame: The arrow, as it is flying, will emit flame particles. The old "flaming arrow" effect will still appear. Arrows shot through lava will NOT emit flame particles, but will still appear to be on fire.
Infinity: The arrow will emit blue particles as it flies, and will continue to emit them when it lands, as a signal for "You can't pick this up".
