According to the wiki, passive mobs are attracted to light if there's no grass around. I propose extending this system.
First, aggressive mobs (those that require low light to spawn) are repelled by light if there is no prey (a player) around to get their attention. They prefer to lurk in the shadows and dark corners, naturally enough, and might add a bit of creepiness in that mobs might find dark recesses that you can't see into and ambush you when you come by.
Second, passive mobs are attracted to light even if there is grass around. This effect should probably be rather weak, but maybe enough that you can put a torch out in the wilderness over a drop trap and catch some animals.

I like the idea of passive animals being atracted to light, and the idea of a trap. But wouldn't the aggressive mobs being repelled by light keep them away from your house and therefore reduce the element of surprise?
Aggressive mobs already run for shadows and water unless the player is around. It was added recently. It may only be skeletons at the moment, though. Not too sure.

True. I'm pretty sure it's skeletons and zombies, as they are the ones that burn in sunlight. I don't think the others do.

You better watch closely, or these words just might turn into a juggling squirrel...

I have seen spiders hide in the shade on occasion, but those may be coincidences.
