I love thinking of new ideas and finding ways to improve minecraft's gaming experience. I never would of thought that a recipe would ever be changed, being that it could cause confusion and negative responses from the minecraft community. However, I felt some recipes needed to be changed so some items could become more valuable and crafting would be more challenging. My first thought was having leather be part of the book recipe for it's hard cover.
After posting it through Jeb's twitter, email, and getsatisfaction.com, the recipe never got far. I ended up pushing aside my ideas and started playing around with snapshot tests. I then started helping around the wikipedia to make sure everyone had the correct information about upcoming patches. I even participated in the known bugs page. Someone then said that leather lacked use and that it needs something to give it that extra kick of being useful, that's when I mentioned my recipe idea and soon after books now require leather.
I'm not sure if this was cause of what I said. But it made me believe that things can change if you voice your opinion. So now I'm brainstorming ideas of how to improve Minecraft's recipes. I've even recently been learning how to make some pixel art.

Red - Name Change
Green - Pixel Change
Blue - Other or Both
These are indicators stating that I need help thinking of a pixel art or name for a particular item.
1) Tools
Forge
This is the new furnace with a catch. You will no longer be able to cook food in this new renamed and retextured furnace. This forge will only heat non-food items.
Fishing Rod
Bucket
Large Chest
Because large chests are now craftable, this means you can now put large and small chest next to each other.
Flint
This means that digging gravel will no longer yield flint, giving gravel the ability to be finally used as a reliable decoration. In addition, players would no longer have to dig gravel continiously for it to become flint.
Flint Axe
This will replace cobblestone axe for obvious reasons. Cobblestone is easier to obtain than wood which is a problem.
Flint Hoe
This will replace cobblestone hoe for obvious reasons. Cobblestone is easier to obtain than wood which is a problem.
Flint Pickaxe
This will replace cobblestone pickaxe for obvious reasons. Cobblestone is easier to obtain than wood which is a problem.
Flint Shovel
This will replace cobblestone shovel for obvious reasons. Cobblestone is easier to obtain than wood which is a problem.
Flint Sword
This will replace cobblestone sword for obvious reasons. Cobblestone is easier to obtain than wood which is a problem.
2) Cooking
The goal with my cooking recipes is to not add new items, but to improve current recipes and have foods that require to be cooked, now cookable. This adds difficulty for survival in the right areas.
Oven
The oven has the exact same texture as the furnace. However, it's now an oven where it can only cook food and nothing else. Because it requires rock, it's not the first heating station you will obtain. It can also cook more than one food at a item but there is a limit.
Flour
This is the #1 most needed ingredient in the game. It can be used for so many recipes, especially ones that we currently have which we use wheat for instead.
Dough
Another ingredient that can be used for many other things even other than bread. Also water will finally become an ingredient like milk. This is a huge step for cooking.
Bread
Cookie Dough
Yes, it's finally cookable. I also added sugar and egg unlike the previous recipe, since those are ingredients that are commonly needed to make cookies. Flour as you can see, replaces wheat as it should. You also no longer require a crafting table to make them.
Cookie
Carved Pumpkin
Yes, this means naturally grown or spawned pumpkins will no longer have faces and flint has another use. Some people just don't want faces on their pumpkins. In addition, flint will not be consumed for this craft, only pumpkins.
Pumpkin Seeds
Is no longer made from a carved pumpkin. A carved pumpkin will no longer yield seeds.
Pumpkin Pie Batter
I've made what everyone has been dying to have. Pumpkins need to be edible and this is how it starts and of course I didn't forget, it needs to be cooked.
Pumpkin Pie
This is treated exactly like cake. If you place it down, you can have slices of the pie until it's all gone.
Cake Batter
Those little red berries are raspberries, mind as well make them be the first berry bushes in the game since cakes already have them on their pixel art.
Cake
Clay Bowl
You don't cook food with a wooden bowl, that's just not a very bright idea. Not even that, but wooden planks already have enough crafts and clay practically has none.
Bowl
Prepared Stew
I've added water into the recipe, since you need water to make stew. Right clicking with prepared stew will empty the bowl, which means it cannot be eaten.
Mushroom Stew
Lets face it, the current way to make stew is just too easy. Also, mooshrooms will still give you mushroom stew that's already cooked since it's nice and warm straight out of the cow's udder.
I'd say it makes things way more complex then they need to be. If it was directly 3 wheat to 2 flour to a bread each, so 3 wheat means 2 bread, that would be good. Also, cookies are completely and utterly useless, I usually just make them for show or for the lols.

It's not complex at all, it's very simple. It adds extra steps for the right reasons. Cookies will also be useful with the new update, because cocoa beans will be farmable. I'm trying to make this game more fun, cooking is just garbage at the moment and all you're doing is asking for it to be easy.

So adding more ingredients that take longer to get to create these foods makes them better? Do explain that to me.

It doesn't add complexity, it adds difficulty. If I'm playing survival mode, I don't want to make a plantation of wheat and make an unlimited supply of food. Bread is by far the most unfair sources of food because it doesn't even require to be cooked. This is a "crafting game", it needs more items in it. These steps are not only for one purposes. Flour as I've already mentioned, can be made with plenty of things.
It's better to make it this way because cooking becomes fun. In order to make foods, you'd be required to get an egg from a chicken, cocoa beans from a tree, flour from wheat, and sugar from sugar canes. If people love getting resources as much as they say they do, well here is the perfect opportunity to do so.
Why must we cook the food? You need to plan ahead otherwise you're stuck with eating low quality foods like rotten flesh and apples. This is balanced and more strategic gameplay, this is fun.
I've changed the cookie dough texture, renamed cake dough, renamed (prepared stew) and added the oven. Ovens will add more difficulty when it comes to food. You will not be able to cook food until you obtain a forge first, turn cobblestone into stone, then craft a oven. In addition, the texture of the oven will finally match up with it's ingredients.
This makes people spend more time standing around making food angrily. There isn't that many craft able foods so I will just stick with melon or steak to avoid extra effort. Until you completely redo everything im not sure about it.
The big problem is, like the above poster said, people would just eat simple food instead of preparing complex food. There is no way to just say " complex food will restore more food bars" without making any food OP. the only way to add food more complex would be to have a more complex food system, with maybe 100 points instead of 10. Then you could say one food restores 25, and another restores 43.(or something)
Because making any food restore 8 points is WAY op.

You better watch closely, or these words just might turn into a juggling squirrel...

Melon has to be found and is quite rare and risky to get. Steaks and porkchops require you to kill animals that don't respawn on their own. To top it off, animals need a fence, wheat, and time to reproduce. So it's basically the same as making food angrily. I'm not doing this to anger people though, just want to add some fun because this game gets boring fast if you're not decorating.
With my ideas, you will find players choosing particular ways to obtain food, whether it's farming animals or baking foods. You make it seem like it's a bad thing, when it's just the opposite. This is a way of giving us more freedom by allowing us to do not only what we want, but how we want to do it.
The bowl thing is not good cause you can just make a bowl out of wood.
But the rest is AWESOME!!!
It gives more challenges and realism to the game
Thanks for the feedback. However, making wooden bowls is not very challenging and using a wooden bowl to cook food in is not a very good idea when it comes to realism. There are just so many reasons why wooden bowls should instead be made out of clay.

What's up? I'm the proud co-owner of a little ClassiCube server called Minebuild.

Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.

Please send your feedback, I have much more to add. If this page isn't active, I will most likely abandon this project.
