So, I was watching and while he was talking about his monorail design, I had to ask myself why we couldn't place rail on narrow blocks like Glass panes.
So, I propose that rails be able to be placed on Iron Bars and Glass Panes (maybe Fences? Their height should cause issues though) or, a more interesting alternative:
Monorails.
Narrow rails that don't automatically connect to normal track, take less resources to produce (per single recipe. Not overall), and are much thinner than normal track allowing placement on narrow blocks.
Some quickly edited images of monorail track:
Monorail
Crafting Recipe
Powered Monorail
Crafting Recipe
Detector Monorail
Crafting Recipe
Uses:
More complex railways/rail systems
Cheaper crafting recipes (when low on Iron/Gold)
Aesthetics
More to come?
Advantages:
Does not automatically connect to normal track
Take less resources (Iron and Gold)
Placeable on narrow blocks
Disadvantages:
Does not automatically connect to normal track
Takes more resources (Redstone, Stone and Wood)
I could also provide screenshots of these if you want an in-game feel for their design.
I'll gladly support this, it would make minecart paths look much smoother and it has a really good texture (if they're not going to be adding anything like this in the near future, I might even change the minecart track texture to the ones you made ).
Also, I don't believe it would be taking more resources than regular minecart tracks.. Unless you mean items per crafting recipe, but I don't have time to think about it right now :P.
As long as there isn't a special type of Minecart, and minecarts run slower.
The former because people try to do that in every suggestion; they take it too far with adding just one more block/item to make their suggestion look bigger, and it spoils the entire thing.
The latter because, basically, you don't want players only buying monorails and skipping out on rails just because they're cheaper. Slower or looses speed more quickly, your choice.

All I did was edit the normal track designs by moving pixels
Go ahead if you want. I actually want to try it out, myself.

It's actually fairly costly to produce the things in number...

Good thing I resisted temptation on that.
Though I wouldn't exactly say no to a different kind of cart, really. Depends on how it compares to a normal Minecart.

Except it really isn't cheaper, though.
Normal Track: (1 Craft) 6 Iron Ingots + 1 Stick for 16 Rail
Monorail: (3 Crafts) 6 Iron Ingots + 3 Sticks for 9 Rail
Detector Track: (1 Craft) 6 Iron Ingots + 1 Stone Pressure Plate + 1 Redstone for 6 Rail
Detector Monorail: (6 Crafts) 6 Iron Ingots + 1 Stone Pressure Plate + 6 Redstone for 6 Rail
Though, looking back, maybe I should change the crafting results to 5 Monorail, 2 Powered Monorail and 2 Detector Monorail so it becomes more focused on Redstone and Misc costs than metal costs.
Results with changed recipe:
Normal Track: (1 Craft) 6 Iron Ingots + 1 Stick for 16 Rail
Monorail: (3 Crafts) 6 Iron Ingots + 3 Sticks for 15 Rail
Detector Rail: (1 Craft) 6 Iron Ingots + 1 Stone Pressure Plate + 1 Redstone for 6 Rail
Detector Monorail: (3 Crafts) 3 Iron Ingots + 3 Stone Pressure Plate + 3 Redstone for 6 Rail
This way, the Monorail costs...
26 Iron Ingots + 13 Sticks for 65 Monorail (in comparison to 24 + 4 for 64 normal Track)
32 Gold Ingots + 32 Sticks + 32 Redstone for 64 Powered Monorail (in comparison to 66 + 11 + 11 for 66 Powered Track)
32 Iron Ingots + 32 Stone Pressure Plates + 32 Redstone for 64 Detector Monorail (in comparison to 66 + 11 + 11 for 66 Detector Track)
So this way, the Redstone cost skyrockets to produce these in number, while you'll have more Iron and Gold leftover.
Fences are okay, to entities it's one and a half blocks tall, but one block tall in all other ways. So the rail can be placed on it.
I know the track itself would be okay... the issue lies with the fact that Minecarts are entities and all things that can ride Minecarts are entities and entities are affected by the extra height of the fences.

What do you folks think?

[quote=Badgerz]You have to keep in mind that people are stupid.
[quote=Catelite]Just because you don't understand how something works, doesn't make it broken or pointless. >_<

I'm thinking of changing the recipes a bit.
