I posted this idea before, but I was incredibley unclear as to what i was suggesting, so here is my revised version.
When you enchant a sword, it just gains an additional ability when it strikes. This, to me, has been boring since it came out, and never really added a true layer to the combat in minecraft. So listen up, becasue these are the alternate enchantment effects, each ability is used by alt-clicking (this replaces the standard block ability).
Sharpness: Charge up swing. Much like a bow, you will be slower while charging but when right click is released, a larger ammount of damage.
Smite: The sun. Holding alt-click will make your blade emit rays of light, any smite-applicable enemies will take damage within range of light.
Bane of Arthropods: Parry. If a spider attacks you while you are blocking, the attacks damage will be negated and the spider will take damage. Additionally, the block will prevent poison, & cave spiders will become poisoned.
Knockback: Charge up smack. Charge up your sword, then swing, hitting the enemies with the side of your blade, sending them flying. Additionally, while charging, arrows will be deflected towards your crosshairs.
Fire Aspect: Flamethrower. Extend your reach 1 block with a violent flame shooting from your blade. This will wear down the sword faster, but will ignite mobs, and surfaces.
Looting: Magnetize. While holding down alt-click, enemies will have trouble aproaching you within a certain difference (much like running water). Additionally items will be pulled towards you.
Hope this is easier to understand, natually I'd love to hear about your opinions on these ideas, and even suggest your own! Would be nice to hear some ideas about some bow differences.
Well, bane of arthropods for example, the addition of poisoning cave spiders would only be added at tier II. And smites ability would start out only 1 block range, and upgrading it would increase the distance to 5 blocks.
Dealing with overpower (mainly on just swords) isn't really needed, I mean no one is going to enchant an iron sword instead of a diamond sword, and diamond swords without enchants kill most hostile mobs in 3-5 hits (or 2 crits) and it would be silly to be hauling an enchanted diamond sword around without at least iron armor, so mobs -even creepers from point blank- cant really do that much damage to you before you put them down. In fact, in my eyes, enchantments are supposed to make weapons OP, the enderdragon has a lot of health, so you really should have something that can do substantial damage.
