We have a number of lighting blocks in the game, most of which serve at least slightly unique purposes. I think there are a couple other properties and purposes that would really make sense to have in a light block, but minecraft does not have them.
For an example of what I mean, consider torches, glowstone, and jack-o-lanterns. Torches are the go-to light source because they are cheap and they have no collision box. Jack-o-lanterns have a unique aesthetic, work underwater, and have a collision box. Glowstone is the same, but more expensive with a different aesthetic. Then there are glowstone lamps, redstone torches, lava, and fire, which also all have unique properties as lighting.
But these aren't quite all the properties that would be useful in a lighting block. Consider the fact that every light source except ambient light in Minecraft is always reddish. Why? go to the end and it's obvious that the engine can handle more than just the red tint of torches and the bluish tint of night. Unless there's a reason why it can't do more than two color tones intersecting, the building portion of the game would benefit a lot from some color variety in our lighting. This wouldn't even need any new blocks. If redstone torches became more red, portals glowed purple, and glowstone gave off a more golden tone, just that would add a lot of depth to the visual experience of Minecraft.
It also bugs me that there are no durable light sources in Minecraft. All of them are easy to destroy by hand or TNT. Except for lava, of course, but that hardly counts. The thought crossed my mind that you could kill two birds with one stone by adding a durable green light source that used end stone in its crafting recipe, but any high-strength light would be a very cool addition.
Minecraft also does not have a transparent (as in, lets sunlight through) light source that has a collision box. Ideal applications for this would be rare, but it'd be a cool thing to have, don't you think? A sunroom that glows at night? Maybe that blue-glowing crystal that was going to be the end portal frame...
I'm open to constructive criticism, purposeful and educated flaming, and any other light-block properties you can think of. Have at it.
From back in the day, Lanterns. They were a good idea, but torches burning out were not. Lanterns would've been nice to have, especially if they could've been hung from a ceiling, unlike torches, and were that little bit brighter like Glowstone. Obviously, the recipe would be more demanding, perhaps it would take some coal, a string (for a wick), a piece of glass, and an iron ingot for 4 of them?

Redstone lamps are a full block and require a RedStone signal to be powered. The benefit is that you can control whether or not the light is on or off, like a real light. The disadvantage is that they block movement.
What I'm suggesting is essentially a "block" that is functionally similar to the torch, albeit with two different, and distinct properties.
1. They can be attached to a ceiling by the top.
2. They burn a little brighter than a torch.
I apologize that I had to be more specific for you.
A collision-less light source that can be hung from a ceiling would be a cool look. We definitely don't have one now.
A rare, glowing mushroom in the nether could be a neat addition, too, I think. Would be a good candidate for another colored light too. Minecraft contains light sources that spread, but both of them are very dangerous.
