Lightning does only five things:
Hurts you
makes a fire
makes a pigman
makes a charged creeper
makes a flash in the sky
That seems a bit anti-climactic then lightning in real life.
The lightning needs to cause new environmental changes, but not too OP.
When lightning strikes sand, it should have a chance of turning into glass.
When lightning strikes an iron block, mine cart, or iron bars, they become "charged". When you touch a charged block, it looses its charges and deals 3 hearts of damage.
If lightning hits a redstone wire, the redstone will become fully powered for 30 seconds, then will fade out.
Lightning should be an option, it causes lag sometimes.
Wearing iron armor, will increase chances of being struck by lightning.
Zombies will be struck by lightning more often, now that they carry iron tools.
Holding iron tools, will increase chances of being struck by lightning.
Wearing leather armor, will prevent you from being struck by lightning.
Skeletons are not effected by lightning.
Being higher in the air will increase chances of getting struck by lightning.
Lightning instanstly causes TNT, or already charged creepers, to explode
I think there should be blocks that summon lightning when powered, in addition to this. They should only spawn one lightning bolt at a time, the same way dispensers only dispense one item when they're powered, to keep the lightning blocks from becoming too OP. They shouldn't take power from lightning, otherwise the "one at a time" effect is canceled out.
