Basically When you're in the desert and it starts raining/snowing in the rest of the world the sky suddenly goes black and you can't see the sun or moon anymore, which is really strange and kinda ruins the asthetic.
I think there should be sandstorms, basically you have a image like snow but denser and sand coloured, flowing around in the air about the speed of rain, the sound of wind blowing and the fog becomes tiny limiting vision. (if possible also make the fog sand coloured)
The sand would collect in thin layers on solid blocks with nothing above them just like snow does, layers which you can dig up with a shovel, giving you a small pile of sand and craft 4 of these into a sand block and since a sandstorm is a bit more serious than a little light snow it should collect on the ground much faster than snow does.
As a weather option, in addition to the snow and rain we have now, this would be interesting to have in deserts. I'm not really sure how it could move sand, but it would be neat if it slowed you down when you were in it.

I've never noticed the sun/moon disappear during a storm in the desert before, but a sandstorm would create a good companion for the blotting out of the sun/moon.
I think snow particles would be too large. I think individual texels (rather than the larger groups that make up the snowflakes) are needed. The result would look something like a yellow static moving swiftly horizontally.
The yellow rendering fog is a nice touch and adds to the illusion of there being a thick cloud around you. As soon as you step into a desert area the fog would slowly appear over the course of, say, 6-10 seconds. The fog distance would vary slightly over time (coming closer and receding a few blocks smoothly and randomly) as you remain in the desert to mimic streams of dust.
For more audio variety, there could be two types of sounds. One type is sounds of wind blowing. The other is the hissing that sand grains make when impacting different surfaces. The sounds of the wind blowing could randomly vary in both volume and pitch over time (wind velocity is rarely constant; it tends to come in gusts and varies in direction). At random times (say, every 3-15 seconds), the current volume and pitch are noted and anywhere from 1-5 seconds later the sound of sand blowing across a surface would be played at a similar pitch (with some random variance) but no louder than the wind volume (it could be less, but never more).
I have ideas regarding dust piles being blown around that could equally apply to snow piles (making snow drifts), but I will refrain from adding them at this point.
If you are a Battletech/Mechwarrior geek you may enjoy my Timberwolf/MADCAT model (the source of my avatar) (warning: image-heavy link target) I will often edit my posts after I have posted them in an attempt to improve their clarity (I value a few high quality posts over several low quality ones; the more lengthy the post, the more time it requires to edit) so you might want to wait for a while if this post is recent and refresh to see if anything has changed before replying to it.
Yeah by denser i meant less space between the particles, not bigger particles, the particles should be pretty small.
In the video my 'sand' texture is just random sand coloured pixels all over the image..
and yeah the gradual fog appear/disappear is a good idea, also i like the idea of multiple sounds.
Meaby make it rondomly move sand blocks, as in real life, sand storms can mobe huge bodyes of sand in some day, the sand dunes is on the constand move in a desert.
I dunno, i think that would make it pretty laggy, also you wouldnt wanna go home and find that your house has been completely buried.
With the thin layers its just a tap with a shovel to break and they dont stack, but solid sand blocks in multiple layers would be a chore.
Good idea nato_potato. "Maybe if you're in a hardcore world it could slowly damage you and blizzards would too, forcing you to seek shelter." I think it should like slowly pile up around you, like it starts like snow does, but slowly rises around you forcing you to find higher ground. Kind of like a flood. Speaking of floods, that would be cool also
I like this idea. It'd be good if moving in storm conditions had some effect; either making you move more slowly, or making you more hungry, or even (in sandstorms) causing damage.
Perhaps if you're playing on hard mode it could damage crops or perhaps buildings?
I hadn't thought about it damaging blocks, but yeah it makes sense for it to break plants (except cactus) that are outside.
I don't think damaging buildings would be a good idea though, it's your shelter, if that can be broken by the sand then your only option is to stay out of the desert.

Also, infinite glass! Epic since we can no longer recover glass!
Oh wait! There is!
