After 1.8+, the terrain generator changed to make the shape of the land depend on the biome. Worst. Mistake. Ever.
So far, they've tried to fix it by adding randomly generated hills and such, but it still is very bland.
I think I have an idea less complicated than the biome levels suggestion (which is actually redundant in regards to returning to random generation) and easier to implement.
My idea is this: Have the seed determine the shape of the land.
The biomes will simply be placed on top of the blank land that the seed makes.
So, the land can be made however the seed determines, be it gigantic pillars,
curvy plateaus, endless plains, or folded overhands, doesn't matter.
If the generator decides to put a desert there, then all thats going to happen is
the dirt will change into sand, the stone into sandstone and add cactus, dead bush.
The shape will not be determined by the biome.
Same thing with Forests; Just stick trees all in one place wherever grass exists.
Again, land isn't changed.
Snow, same thing.
You get the idea.
This allows for endless combinations of land-
Wavy deserts, snowy mountains,
icy plateaus, and even jungle canyons.
i know my english is not really good and I think my message is in the good place because i put it in beta survival and i can put font whenever i whant i did not done that post for getting hate but for getting feedback
I mean sure sometimes the land is bland, but I don't want to have everywhere be extremely, how do i put this, rugged? the point is I spend enough time trying to get a good flat area to set up my home in. I do not need my forest spawning all willy nilly over a mountain making it impossible to get wood. Nor do I need another mountain, only this time made of sand blocking my path. The current terrain gen makes travel a lot easier since most biomes are generally flat. To have to deal with important biomes spawning over awkward terrain would make things quite harder in a non-game-improving way.
Im not here to debate increased difficulty, but i will say unnecessary work isnt a fun addition. Overall im fine with the current terrain, so long as they add some logic for biome spawns. Snowy junlges. Even i minecraft they are rediculous.
It should be changed, but it's hardly a crisis. Deserts are flat and actually look like deserts, there aren't hills in swamps or something, basically, changing land shape based on biomes isn't a bad thing. Considering the current biomes, it looks much better than it would with what you suggested, and adding more hills and things would definitely fix it (deserts are my favorite now, with these epic mountains). What you suggested made it sound like every biome would be a mountain one with different blocks. You'd have wavy swamps, flat jungles, press F3 in what looks like a plains and find yourself in a mountains, basically bad all over.
To sum all that up in a more readable sentence: Biomes should be able to decide the land shape. There's a difference between what you suggested and "biome diversity", that is to say, completely separated generations are going to look more bad than good.
could work but then what happens with things like palins biomes....mountain biomes..and such that need certain features..you get a plains biome placed over an area that was created to have high peaks...then what?
Why isn't this on the front page? (ps there should be some restrictions, eg places next to large water bodies should generate flat for swamps and beaches)

This is precisely what I was trying to say.

Yep. I agree with most of this. Though forests, jungles, tundras and taigas are fine being mountainous (and cold biomes should have higher elevation), grasslands and swamps should stay mostly flat and deserts look good as they are now.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...

So you have a plains covered in snow, an extreme hills covered in trees, a river flowing through a hilly grassland, etc.
