Currenty the nether is a bland wasteland full of lava, with the exception of nether fortresses, random soul sand clumps and glowstone on the ceiling. I think it's time to improve these features and add more, making the nether a more fun and useful place to visit. After all, notch mentioned that once the nether is improved, the skylands will be added. So here's my ideas!
To make the nether a bit more interesting, there should be soulsand beaches. These would generate at the base of a lava pool or lava sea. Basically the opposite of overworld beaches, with lava instead of water, and soulsand instead of ordinary sand. Random soulsand clumps will be less common, but will still generate.
Glowstone in the nether is an unrenewable resource, mine it, and its gone. But i have an idea that will keep you getting glowstone. So here's the idea: glowstone root, attach it to walls and ceilings. This would grow glowstone back. This will have a limited range of course, so glowstone won't infinately spread all over the nether. These can be taken as well, providing a way of farming glowstone. However, you must plant these on netherrack for them to grow.
Since the new map height was introduced, a large open space has been above the bedrock on top of the nether. What will become of this space? The upper nether! This will be a random mixture of netherrack and stone. This won't be another giant cavern, however. This will be a solid layer, with ordinary cave systems. In the middle of this layer diamond ore will generate, and at the top of the layer, redstone as well.
Now, i know this has been suggested alot, but here it is. Nether exploration camps, with NPC explorers. These will be made of cobblestone huts, with chests filled with food, weapons and armour. Explorers will either be armoured or not. If attacked, these will fight back. Zombie pigmen will often attack camps and get into fights with explorers. Explorers will defend eachother, defend you and mine glowstone. Sometimes a nether portal will be in these camps.
What comes out of fire? Smoke! And what happens when there's alot of this? Toxic clouds! Since the nether is a cavern, these clouds will stick around. A nether cloud (or gas cloud) would be dark red and would look like a cloud in fancy graphics. These would be rare, they would start up around large spots of fire and float around. Eventually they will recede and disappear. If you step in these clouds, you would instantly be poisoned. These wouldn't be able to go through blocks though, this would get people angry that arehanging out in their nether shelters.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
No offence but the nether is extremly usefull. Never ending fire on blocks powder for getting to the end and blaze rods for makng potions.
Nice idea though but im not so sure about the upper nether it sounds a bit dumb.
I like the idea about the exploring NPCs but the idea about glowstone saplings is pretty dumb.
No offence but its in the name, glowSTONE. I mean why would stone have saplings?
Mabye the glowstone could hang off the ceiling from a single point and when you mine that the others get destroyed.
To make the glowstone "sapling" mabye you would just "grow" the glowstone like mushrooms and unmined glowstone viens would become HUGE
Soulsand beaches, glowstone crystals that regrow glowstone (and can only be "planted" on the ceiling), and Upper Nether.. I like these ideas, but I don't really care about NPC Explorers. We can have something like this through real players on Multiplayer or local servers. (which might be added in 1.3) Quite frankly though, this really doesn't change the landscape enough to make it more interesting to me.
I can understand if Notch/ Jeb/ Mojang doesn't want to make the Nether a place to build and live, like the Overworld, but it could still use new terrain (areas of other than the constant flow of Netherrack and Lava), with the possiblity of an ore or two. It could even be new blocks that are just mixed in with Netherrack. There could also be an use for those blocks as well, but I'm not sure what it could be. The point is I'd like to see a little more in the Nether, OTHER than Netherrack, with the other usual blocks dotting the landscape. It doesn't have to be full-on Nether biomes, just areas of different terrain, like Minecraft before biomes were introduced or whatever.

"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.
Well thanks for your ideas, i'll be focusing on working out a way of making glowstone renewable. And suggest some new ideas.
(Also this is a bump)
