Minecraft already keeps track of the number of days, so why not add in a calendar to accompany the days. ex: day 1: January 1st, day 59: February 28th, etc. Every 4 years would have a leap year of course. I don't think the coding would be too complex and it would be a nice touch to add to Minecraft and help keep track how many days you've played.
The calendar starts at January 1st when you create a new map and the date is saved somewhere in the map's folder and is even displayed with the map name, game mode, etc. in the map details in-game.
To keep track of how many days I've played, I count how many times I've seen the sun.
Lol that's only one thing it provides, and isn't that a hassle? Having a calendar in-game just seems like something that would make the game more sophisticated with little effort. Like write-able/read-able books featured in the past 2 or so snapshots.

Since you mentioned them, why don't you just use writable books and count the number of days with them? Write a diary entry or something too, if you want. There isn't a need for a calendar.

MC already keeps track of the number of played days, that's not the issue lol. It's just to add some atmosphere. And with the upcoming ability for players to join eachother's single player world, they could celebrate holidays of sorts on the map seeing as the date on the calendar would vary between maps.
If this was added I think you should be able to craft and wall-mount a calender. Perhaps using a painting and 2 pieces of paper as the crafting recipe? I love this idea. If I could code I would love to make mods using suggestions from players.

Unless you mean counting real life days (which is pointless anyway, you're on a computer, you have the date displayed for you, please don't be lazy and, if you haven't altered your settings otherwise, look to the lower right-hand corner of your screen. "Atmosphere" has absolutely nothing to do with it, there's absolutely no reason you need to look at a calender inside a game, in my opinion. The only reason would be a full-screen issue, and you can solve that by pressing a single button.) you'd be celebrating Christmas 3-4 times a year, Minecraft time.

What use will this have other than a boring asthetic feature? Nobody will care about what day it is on thier virtual world so they can celebrate their virtual characters birthday, or something like that. Really all you would need is a area in the pause menu that tells you how many days have passed since you have started playing.

How I keep track of days I have a big chest and put 1 sand block into it every time the sun rises

I'm specifically talking about in-game, Minecraft days. In creative this probably wouldn't be much since creative is for people who focus solely on building. But it's a nice touch to add to survival being able to wake up and know what day it is in comparison to real life.
It wouldn't be displayed on the screen but it could be checked maybe using a calendar or somewhere in the game menu & probably on the debug menu too.
This isn't enough being added to make/use a mod for. It's something that should be added in-game for the same reason as other useless features like Snow Golems, and write-able/read-able books, etc.

But, again, Christmas...three times a year...probably not even in real life December...
It's not comparable to Snow Golems; Snow Golems were the first mob you could build yourself. They're a cheap form of defense and throw their ammo, unlike the strictly-melee Iron Golems. Writable books are something that has been suggested plenty of times before, people wanted it, it allows for diaries, adventure map instructions, regular stories, and, if they can be stored in bookshelves somehow, libraries to have a point to them other than looking cool.
