with the addition of the upside down half steps (slabs), redstone should work with it in a different way. you should be able to conceal redstone by placing a slab on the top half of the block with the redstone under the slab. this would help with keeping redstone concealed and take up less space.
Yeah, but it would take too long to implement into the game. Slabs and double slabs are all different blocks with different damage values, which is why, up until 1.3, wooden slabs acted like stone slabs. Also, if they can implement redstone/concealing slab blocks, then they should implement different combinations of different slabs (wooden and cobblestone. Brick and stone brick, etc). For now, digging down two blocks then placing a block above it is the only way to conceal redstone. I don't think that they will address this issue and implement it into the game for a while, but I'm not saying that they won't. It's a good idea, it's just a pain to them, so they might not do it straight away.
Very good Idea, tired of having to hide my redstone circuits with big ugly structures

This would be a great idea. And it makes sense because redstone dusts's collision box fits between the top of one block and an upside down slab above it.
this would be great.
Redundant thread.
How about you try to do it on a second story of a building without a 3-block thick floor
