I like that bookshelf's can be used for enchanting and decor, but i think there should be more to them.
First, a new crafting recipe:
Where wood is wood, leaves are a wooden half-slab, and the wood tree trunk is a chest.
Second, how the new bookshelf's will act:
When first placed down, they will look like a normal bookshelf, but with no books.
When right clicked, it opens up a chest-like menu.
You can then put books in the bookshelf.
Depending on the number of books in the bookshelf, the texture will change.
I think this would be great with the new writable books feature.
I also think it would be cool, that when you go into strongholds and villages, the bookshelves are mostly filled with blank books, but a couple extra ones with maybe some cool stuff in them.
Yeah, love the concept. Just keep the recipe the same, minus the books. Then you can fill it up with actual books. OR so people's creations aren't ruined, make it so you can craft them with unwritten books for pure decoration. Yeah, that's right, I went there. +1 please.
