I've seen a suggestion for a printing press, and I had a simpler idea
Why not just make Bookshelves into a tile entity
and then put a menu that allows Written books to be
edited and copied?
You use Ink Sacs for fuel, and it converts Raw Books
through the filter slot (thats where you put the written book)
and copies it into a 3x3 Storage area on the other side.
Great idea but it would only really be usefull on multiplayer.
You say that now, but wait until the book you wrote down directions on how to find a diamond vein you couldn't mine at the time dies in a creeper blast.
Bookshelves shouldn't be tile entities because it would ruin secret doors made with them.
Agreed. I like bookshelf doors. So unless they fix it so those can be pushed, I would rather have decorative shelves than functional...that or to have it where six shelves make a Bookcase.
What about making a photocopier instead? It could use ink sacks and redstone to fuel/power it. This would also be a great idea on multiplayer servers. Portable rule set anyone?
Better than a modern printer, that's for sure. I have actually seen a suggestion a couple months ago (about 4-6 months) that suggested a MODERN printer, I was like "WTF, a modern printer and we are using ****ing torches, and wood/stone picks!?"

I find the lack of turtles in your thread disturbing
Honestly, I would rather it be done like this: To copy a book, you use the same recipe as the Book and Quill, but you also put a book you have already written into the crafting grid. It would give you two copies of that book.

No, it'd be useful in SP too. If I write a book full of important notes, being able to copy it will allow me to carry it around without it being lost when I die and it falls into lava.
But I'd rather bookshelves be used for storage and a separate printing press block be made.

Thoughts?
This was something I thought was a bad idea earlier, but then I saw this tweet.
