Yes I would like the underwater exploration. Also possibly acquire the sponge plant while diving and doing something with it to make it work as sponge?
Why do you people keep asking for sponges? I KNOW you are thinking of sponges like creative mode, but are you really so blind that you can't see that people will just drain entire lakes and oceans?

Not necessarily true; IIRC, sponges displace finite water, they don't act as a black hole. That said, you could still clean out oceans and the like... but it's extremely useful, and perhaps almost necessary for flooded caves, so it might need to be added somehow.
I think a siphon block that moves all adjacent water one tile up(one at a time) would be great, even better if they can be stacked to extend the effect.

They would be rare enough that you couldn't stockpile them.
I would suggest that the block delete all water 1 space from it, and make the 26 blocks around it solid as far as water flowing through them.
Why not just make sponges have a finite capacity? They keep absorbing water until they reach their capacity and then stop. Then maybe you have to wait for the sponge to dry out before you can use it again.

Never attribute to malice what can adequately be explained by incompetence.

because then you couldn't use sponges to make air pockets under water, which was one thing that was fun with infinite water.
