Note that I realize there is already a "fences" thread, but it only discusses aesthetic value, which is not as relevant to this discussion.
Fences would be constructs that prevent animals from leaving an area. Pigs, Cows, Sheep, Chicken, whatever, cannot jump over the fences. This introduces a new gameplay aspect; Herding. As an aeesthetic prop, the fence would be useful for marking areas without creating large, annoying blocky obstructions. Planks are a very ugly alternative, and look nothing like fences, they look like walls.
I searched and found someone suggested a shepards crook. My idea is that the Shepards crook would either push animals or make them follow you, so you can enclose them in a fenced-off farm enclosure. This would be useful for harvesting sheep or even milking cows.
Using food to lure animals would be great too. In another game with a herding wild animal type of feature, I would always build fences and then place a trail of food from the wild and into my enclosure, when animals walked into it, I would shut it.
