Here's a way we could revamp the bookshelves, with the new writable books feature in the snapshop in mind;
First off, bookshelves would have a special texture: Only one side would show books.
Secondly, the shelves, if right-clicked on the side showing the books, would function similar to a chest without opening up, and you would be able to store books (only books) in it. It may have the standard small chest GUI or something different.
Kind of a big suggestion, but why not?
I haven't seen any other threads of the like when I've searched, if there is go ahead and delete.
Yeah, you could always put them in a chest, but it'd look a lot better if you could make bookshelves, sans books, then add written books and maybe unwritten books to it. Imagine how well this would work with adventure maps.

"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.
let them be both sides ... but
you craft them without books -> empty bookcase
when you put some books in there the texture changes and adds some books
manybe one or two more stages till the bookcase is full with the corresponding texture of a full bookcase
there should be space for ~12 books

Would work well with the new writable books.
I could write a novel and create copies!
OR OR OOOORRRR you could use this for aesthetics and adventure maps. Why not?
