Many mob farms or mob traps require you to manually retrieve the items at their collection point within 5 minutes of the mobs death. Wait, scratch that. ALL farms of any sort require manual collection.
Many people use redstone to make farms at least somewhat automated. However item collection and storage cannot be automated. Yet.
I suggest an item for automating storage of items so you can simply AFK for as long as you want to collect mob drops. This way you don't have to check every 5 minutes.
The crafting recipe is a chest with a dispenser to its right and some redstone to the right of the dispenser. If you can't visualize it, here is a picture:
When powered, any item that is within 1 block of the collector is deposited in the chest. This allows for fully automated mob farms that kill the mob for you.
For other purposes there could be 2 extra slots at the top. I can't draw this because I am generally bad at GUIs. The first slot can have an item placed in it. When there is an item in that slot, the only item the collector can obtain is that certain item. This can be used for mob traps that also organize ALL of your drops!
The second slot can be filled with either a redstone torch, some redstone dust or some glowstone dust. When either of these are in the slot the collector does a certain thing when it collects something.
Glowstone dust - Emits light level 15 for 1 second upon collecting item
Redstone torch - Sends redstone current upwards upon collecting item for 1 second
Redstone dust - Sends redstone current horizantally in all direction upon collection item for 1 second.
If you are wondering here are some possible uses I thought up in about 15 minutes:
Truly, fully automated mob farm
Auto organizer
Have a water current flow over multiple ones that are set to only collect certain items. This auto organizes all your items or a whole bunch of them.
Casino
Have it only accept a certain item like gold and have it send a signal that is counted. This places your bet. The rest is up to you.
Fireplace
For aesthetics you can throw logs into a fire to make a fireplace. Of course they aren't destroyed so it could be a fireplace you pay for. Somewhat great way to scam money out of people when they can't place torches because the area is protected.

This is a signature. There should be something here....
Oh wait! There is!
Maybe a basic collector that collects everything would be a good idea. But something that auto-sorts for you would probably be very much so against the Minecraft spirit; we don't want to make things too easy of have computers do things for us.

Well if someone actually was that lazy to make a sorter from this then they probably shouldn't be having themselves in the game. Besides the sorter might actually be useful for a mob trap when you might have a whole stream of drops coming to you.
