There are a lot of games that have this option.
I play since early alpha(bought the game on alpha) and I'm sick of killing zombies, skeletons and creepers all the time.
One addition that could add to the game is mob levels.
How does it work?
When a mob spawns, It will choose a random level,
Weak, Normal, Strong or Epic.
Weak- 50% of the stats it has now.
A little smaller than the regular mob.
easy to kill.
Normal- The same as now.
Strong-150% of the normal's stats.
A blue light halo on the mob,
May has armor.
Epic- 200% of the normal's stats.
A red halo on the mob,
Has armor,
Heals himself.(If not attacked).
Difficulty affects:
Easy- Will be rare for strong or epic.
Normal-A low chance for strong and rare for epic.
Hard-Strong are more common and epic with low chance.
Drops:
Weak- Rare drops.
Normal- As now.
Strong-has more chance to drop special items.
Epic- Drops special items and big quantity of them.
How it will affect the game:
As I said I play for a long time, Minecraft has a big issue with mobs,
This idea could easily solve the problem getting us harder playing.
I agree. The implementation wouldn't necessarily have to be that exactly, but mobs should spawn at different levels, perhaps depending on the level of the player.
I agree, except I don't really like the size difference or the halos. Maybe just a different texture would be nice.
By weak monsters dropping rare drops, do you actually mean they drop stuff rarely? Because right now, you make it sound like they drop rare drops a lot.
Would the creeper's explosion/damage be affected? because if it is, here is some stats of a Epic creeper (with your measuring percentage):
Epic Creeper: 5000 whole hearts of damage.
Epic Charged Creeper: 9800 whole hearts of damage.
Explosion size: Idk, but it would be 200% of the current size. A Epic charged creeper explosion would make a TNT look like a firecracker.
Now, here would be what a Epic Ghast can do:
Damage: 1800 whole hearts of damage.
Explosion size: 200% of now.
Imagine that, and have that rain down on ya.
Think of health of the mobs? a Epic mob would have 200% of the current health. That would make a Epic Enderdragon have 20,000 whole hearts. THAT would be HARD to defeat, even without that it would do 2000 whole hearts of damage in one go.
Think of that, and imagine the deaths if a Epic Enderdragon would cause if loosed on a multiplayer server? (Spawned from commands) and would take a LONG time to take down. Think of the creations that would be shredded, smashed, and destroyed by the Epic Enderdragon's rampage before it is trapped and destroyed by TNT in a desprate countermeasure?
Think of the sheer difficulty the game would be if this is added.
"Colder than the snow that blankets the earth" "Colder than the ice that cover the stones and freezes the rivers" "Colder than the north wind blowing through a winter-bound forest" "Colder than all these is the smile of a Shade of the Dark"
this sytem seems a bit boring. why not have harder dificulties give more abilities. say skelaton with enchanted bows or spiders with poison. etc.
that'd give an increased challenge and be more interesting than a simple stat change. maybe weak could remove abilties. like spiders can't jump of whatever.
it'd be very funny if strong creepers can blast through obsidian.

In a way, skeletons already have bows enchanted with infinity. They can fire unlimited arrows that can't be picked up.
This isnt really well known, but if you hit a creeper with a bolt of lightning, it becomes "super charged" and does abt 5x the damage it normally does. Example below (SELF PLUG ALERT!! :P)

Thats totally unfair. Why can't we have unlimited ammo?
We can; that enchantment is just incredibly rare.
