Currently, Strongholds seem to be boring, glitchy, and can be very annoying. Now don't get me wrong, the idea of strongholds is amazing, but not well designed
Why its boring
Most of the time you can easily use an eye of ender to quickly travel to the portal, sometimes ending up in the lava pool. If you actually explore, it's a drag. Dark corridors leading to more dark corridors, maybe finding a fountain or a useless library. The only point of going through the actual stronghold is the chance at diamonds in the chests. The only time I have ever felt real excitement was the first time in there, and the creeper out from behind the door.
Glitches
Glitches are a minimal in the strongholds.
One is the spawning of the strongholds. Just looking around and i find an abandoned mine in the stronghold, or a good portion of it is removed due to the tunnel that is spawned.
The only other is the doors glitching with the button, instead of being closed, it's just open.
Why it can be annoying
First, the one glitch I mentioned, sums that up.
Second, the doors. With the amount of doors there are and that the stronghold is mainly unlit, the zombies siege sound on wooden doors is extremely irritating. To add to it, the glitch with iron doors and buttons.
Finally, finding a stronghold. Currently only three are spawned, and only one you can find with an eye of ender. The other two? Well good luck finding them, although with math it can be done according to the wiki:
"All Strongholds are located at random in a radius between 640 and 1152 blocks from the origin, 0/0. Due to the generation algorithm, the Stronghold proper may extend further in or out of that circle. The three strongholds are spawned at equal angles from the center point of the world (that is, each stronghold is 120 degrees from the others, measured from the origin.)"
Now that I've shown my reasons, lets get to the suggestions.
Spawning The world generator needs to recognize strongholds properly, fix it so that the strongholds aren't cut up by mines or caves.
Design The current corridor idea works well but it needs work. Most of the time you are traveling to dead ends or a useless library. It's called a stronghold, lets make it one.
Armory with chests of swords, ingots, and armor.
Jails that don't look like someone carved a hole in the wall.
Library contains a table of enchanting at the center, those books and paper in chests are now bottles o' enchanting.
Maybe a kitchen room with bread and rotten meats.
Sleeping quarters.
A proper entrance. Instead of finding The End portal, there is a proper entrance above ground that leads down into the forgotten place. An eye of ender locks onto that location instead of the portal. Each stronghold has the lock-on and the eye will move to the closest
Some traps. I don't think the previous owners wanted looters to just strut on through.
Some fixes
The spawning of strongholds
Make all doors iron doors with buttons that don't glitch out.
The blocks used are unbreakable to prevent easy tunneling. Although killing the enderdragon might change things
Other ideas
This is the place that leads to the great Ender Dragon, one would think it would be a challenge. Lets make it one.
Monster spawn in the stronghold is increased x1.5. Torches will only decrease it to normal spawn rate.
Mini bosses - Found the portal to The End? Better watch out for the 2 aggressive Endermen guarding it.
The idea of traps - With the world spawn and creation of the strongholds, this can possibly be troublesome to implement, any ideas anyone has would be nice to see.
And that's my two-cents, although it looks more like a 3 pound sack of pennies.
I support. The strongholds definitely need some cleaning up. And some spicing up. Your suggestions satisfy both needs. I especially like the idea of an enchantment table in the library.
I think one good way to solve the stronghold swiss cheese bug would be to make the stronghold's spawning OVERRIDE ALL OTHER NATURALLY OCCURRING STRUCTURES.
