The Gods:
The 'Gods' would be the Admins of the server. Now, besides there being a couple of features such as kicking and banning which should be standard, there should also be other such features that define their 'Godly powers'. Powers could include:
Invisibility (Divine intervention anyone?)
Smite
Teleportation of you and others
Invincibility
Create sub-Gods(OPs) who can be assigned powers. This could create a monotheistic(1 God) or polytheistic(multiple Gods) server.
*Other powers that make you Godly
These could be turned off and on to make you more or less Godly, depending on if you want to play like a God on your own server or not (Some Gods of the Greeks took on human forms)
If you make your 'God(s)' happy, they could possibly reward you by turning dirt into diamond, etc.
Ethical Choices:
Ethical choices/'sin and holiness'/'good and evil', what ever you want to call it, effect how long you are dead for. It would not be visible to the player. Players with 0 points in it would have a normal death period (1-12 hours presumably). Your spawn delay is 'Points'*2='Spawn Delay'
Killing a player with 0 points would subtract 10 from your own points, meaning 20 minutes to your death time.
Killing a player with a positive amount of points, would take away the normal 10 points, but also take away an amount of points equal to theirs.
Example: Joey kills Bobby, who had +20 points, Bobby now loses 10 points, plus 20 points because he killed the slightly pious Bobby. Joey now has -30 points and an additional 60 minutes of death.
Killing a player with negative points would take away the 10 points for killing, but also adds an amount of points equal to their own.
Example: Kevin killed evil Joey who had -150 points, Kevin has lost 10 points for killing, but has also gained 150 points, resulting in +140 points. Kevin has lost 280 minutes to his death time.
Placing someone in a Coffin or cremating them and placing their ashes in an Urn also adds to your points by 5.
Stealing from a container belonging to someone not in your group results in -5 point per object stack.
What kind of 'God' powers apply here? Well I would suggest:
Ability to view and change someones points and what actions penalize you, this could mean malevolent Gods would reward killers and thieves. Or a God could approve a 'Holy War' by not penalizing someone for killing someone else or another group of people.
I think it would encourage players to play nicely, remove the bad players, and add a whole new element of 'Religion' and God worship to Minecraft. Of course it's always up to the Admin to decide whether he wants to be a God, give his OPs God powers, or penalize people for certain actions.
Admins as gods? Don't they have bad enough power trips as it is?
But haven't you read any mythology? There are all sorts of Roman/Greek/Egyptian/Etc. Gods that have absolute rampages and are absolutely crazy, it will be one of those things that define the servers. Besides, a Perma-IP-ban is worse than anything I suggested and Admins can already do that.
In the beginning The Admin created the Host and the Zip.
And the Server was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the Code. And The Admin moved upon the face of the minecraftserver.zip.
And The Admin said, Let run startserver.bat: and there was Map.
But yes, I think that it would ruin a lot of servers. One immature admin could ruin all your hard work by teleporting you into a cave, or simply smiting you. I'm all for random events, but admins? Nah...
