I don't know if this is just considered a bug, but it would be nice when I pull out a torch it would light up; Instead of having to place it on a block to light up. It would be a simple thing to do to make it feel more of a "real game".
I am pretty sure the mod that allowed the torch to light up the are around them made a lot of changes to the lighting system for it to allow him to make the torches work like that, it "can not be done" with the lighting system that is currently being used (or whenever Notch said that)
Note: I am not 100% sure about this, but that is my theory.

ragnarock200: awesome, are those things with the creeper faces pistons or furnaces

I'm just hoping Jeb and the current Minecraft team is willing to work on this. Notch may not have known how, but with all of them over at Mojang working on the game now, I'm sure they could figure it out.
You can just get the mod , Mojang has accepted mods such as the pistons so there is a chance of this mod becoming part of the game a slim one though due to its low popularity
I may be the only one, but I've always wanted more of a flashlight. Like, glowstone in a glass jar with a leather flap that can be folded over or away from the opening. I think you should be able to move the leather covering and light up a small, circular area directly in front of you temporarily by pressing f (which can be bound to a different key, of course).

I still prefer handheld torches. I really hope that handheld torch light becomes part of the game.
From what I have heard on previous topics discussing this, It is not that it can't be done, but rather that it would be too processing-intensive under SMP, especially if many people decided to walk around holding torches at the same time.
Even turning on and off redstone lamp blocks can cause some major lag on SMP servers and SSP games, depending how many and how frequently the lamp blocks are turned on and off.

Maybe it could be disabled in SMP or only visible to the person holding it.

That wouldn't matter as the server still has to process all the light level changes, which is the main problem.
