Leveling up in Minecraft by collecting orbs from mobs was a cool addition to the 1.8 update, but really it is kind of pointless right now, in my opinion. All that leveling up does is just shows people that you killed however many mobs you killed and nothing else. So I think it would be really cool to add upgrading to minecraft by leveling up. First you would make the Upgrades Table. The Upgrades Table can be made from a Crafting Table by placing a book in the middle and 8 diamonds around the book. Once you place the Upgrades Table down you can right click it and it would show you all of the upgrades you can get. Each time you level up you get 1 Upgrade Point. All of the upgrades are worth 1 Upgrade point until the last upgrade in that category which would cost 3 Upgrade Points. The last upgrade in a categoy will give you something special. Each Upgrading Category has 10 upgrades. These could be some of the categories.
Speed - Each time you upgrade this, you will be able to run faster and jump farher. The last upgrade will let you run accross 1 block high without even jumping or slowing down. Health - Each time you upgrade this, you will be given one extra heart. The last Upgrade will let you spawn after dying with all of the items in your inventory as you had when you died. Health Regen - Each time you upgrade this, you will regenerate health faster. (Only good for Easy, Normal, or Hard. Peaceful would be Pointless.) The last upgrade would make it regenerating health like peaceful mode. Water Breathing - Each time you Upgrade this, you will be able to hold your breath under water longer. Last upgrade lets you breathe under water. Strength - Each time you upgrade strength you will be able to destroy blocks faster with just your hands or with tools. It will also add more damage to hits on mobs. Last upgrade will make mobs fly back a bit when hit. Hunger - Each time you upgrade this, your hunger will go down slower and every food item, when eaten will regenerate your hunger bar more. Last upgrade will make food heal health more too. Luck - Each time you upgrade this, you will have more luck with anything to do with chance. This includes breaking grass has more chance of dropping seeds. Leaves will drop more apples. Throwing eggs will make chickens appear more. The last upgrade will give you a chance to get 2 items from mining one ore.
I know these upgrades do some of the same things as potions and enchantments but this would add so much more things to do in minecraft when you get bored in survival and would give you better reason to kill mobs. If you have any ideas about this, then please reply!!!
An unarmed veteran should never be able to defeat a noob in iron armor just because they have higher stats. It's one of the reasons I like Minecraft: it has no permanent leveling system. Where is the dislike button? This is why the forums need one.

This would just mostly be for single player not multiplayer so it would just make the game more fun, not unfair!

That makes no sense. At the moment, SSP and SMP are essentially the same, the only difference being one you play with others and the other you don't. And, I believe it's the Bukkit team which is working on making multiplayer and single player one and the same, or something along those lines. Either way, in Multiplayer it would be unfair. All someone has to do is kill mobs and they can go off one-hit KO-ing people at 30 miles per hour, while regenerating health like they were in peaceful mode.
Furthermore, XP can be used for enchantments, which can do a lot of what you have up there, water breathing being the most apparent. Potions can also accomplish some of these tasks. So why do we need two different ways of doing the same thing?
Secondly, the reason you kill mobs is mostly because they're attacking you, or because you want to. Otherwise your entire game would be standing in a crappy 3x3 wooden box. In other words, no, this does not give a better reason to kill mobs.
If this is also implemented for Multiplayer as well then there should be an option to allow or disallow the upgrades.
See, this I don't like. I really don't like it when people go "Oh, we can just make it optional!", because once a few people agree that something could be made option, some people see it and start suggesting more things on the basis that no one can complain because it's "optional", and there doesn't need to be an option to toggle on/off every little detail. Some things are all right; lighting, difficulty, ect. but I don't like options for things like "do you want upgrades" or "do you want rain". Stuff like that.

Having options make the game better just for you. You can customize the game to fit your wants so there is nothing bad with having more options.
Basically, this means that if you kill the Enderdragon you become some kind of an über unkillable beast (assuming you have the diamonds, and 8 diamonds aren't too hard to get). An EXP grinder in SMP can do the same thing. We all (should) know that the End isn't the end of the game; since you become something capable of mass murder after killing it's master, it might as well be the end of Minecraft.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Any decent player would be able to get the highest levels on all of them over the course of a few short days. It would make the game too easy, and as the others have stated, many of these things are already available. While the concept is fine, I feel that these levels should influence other things, such as mining speed, or saturation levels. This would not make one too powerful, but would also make life slightly easier. Finally, I would like to say that if you use mods, mcmmo can do much of the things that this suggestion states.

Enchanting uses up levels.
It seems like itd be a good idea but arent there already things that implement speed, health regen and whatnot

Some of these can be achieved BTW.

[quote=Badgerz]You have to keep in mind that people are stupid.
[quote=Catelite]Just because you don't understand how something works, doesn't make it broken or pointless. >_<
