Although I've suggested this once before, I will suggest a much better and more refined (rimshot) version.
The Industrial Furnace
It's crafted like so:
N = Nothing
F = Furnace
R = Iron Ingot
FRF
NFN
RFR
Now, the basic properties....
It looks like a regular furnace, except with iron edges and openings. The place where items are supposed to go (on the block) is larger.
GUI-wise, it has a 4x4 grid for smelting but still a single fuel square. It can function like a regular furnace, but....
IT CAN FUSE CERTAIN THINGS INTO OTHER THINGS! (mostly metals).
But, before I explain that, I'll explain the fuel.
When one thing is being smelted, fuel consumption is the same as a regular furnace.
When two things are being smelted (aka being fused), fuel consumption is doubled (sticks do 25% of the operation, and coal can do 4 operations of the sort)
When three things are being fused, fuel consumption is tripled (sticks do 16.7%, coal can do 2.67 operations)
When four things are being fused, fuel comsumption is massive, or quadrupled (sticks do 12.5%, coal can do 2 operations)
Now, what could be made with this.....
Steel Ingots (smelting an iron ingot and coal together)
Wire (Redstone Dust+String+Gold Nugget)
(suggest more, please)
I'd like for some suggestions on what could be made. Using proposed things (currently just Steel and Wire) is okay. Things from mods is not. Anything available in vanilla survival can be used in your contributions (this includes things only acquirable through Silk Touch)
It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure I like the recipe. Seems a bit odd.
That aside, it would be nice to be able to make alloys. One thing I could suggest would be brass, made from Redstone Dust and Gold Ingot. The reasoning is a bit complicated, and involves some mythology, but since you already have gold in the wire recipe, I think it could be justified. Another thought, though. Since Minecraft has a fantasy bent, perhaps rather than having regular steel you could add Lapis Lazuli to the recipe and have Damascus steel instead? For the purpose of the game, it could be called Damask, even though that's technically a kind of fabric.
For making Steel into something better, I was thinking Steel+Lapis Lazuli+Light Blue Dye to make Bluesteel.
I'm not sure of its special properties, but it could have massive durability but be slightly slower than Steel.
And it could make wands. Not sure on that one.

The possibilities are semi-limitless-ish!

Iron Ingots are either iron or steel, and the leather chestplates are just leather.
I'll leave their functions up to you.
