Have you ever wanted to do more with pumpkin than use it as an ugly glowstone alternative, or a seldom-used golem activator? Have you ever wanted to do more with wheat and sugarcane than just bread and cake?
Pies would use some of the more infrequently used items, and also act as a low-budget weapon.
To first make pies, you're gonna need a pie crust; you should be able to make this by putting wheat in a minecart-like formation on your crafting table (this will use 5 wheat.)Fill in the rest of the crafting table with sugar (which will use 4, if you've done it right). Next you will put either an apple, a pumpkin, a block of TNT (bear with me), or an already-cooked meat product (steak, porkchop, or chicken) above an empty piecrust in your crafting table.
Placing a pumpkin, meat, or apple above your piecrust will result in a pumpkin pie, meat pie, or apple pie, respectively. The only difference between the three is what the interior looks like once you have taken a bite. Placing a block of TNT, however, makes a PIEBOMB! These can be thrown and explode on contact with a block or creature. They have the exact same strength of a normal TNT explosion, but they only do damage, and don't destroy any terrain. (I'm not sure if it would be overpowered if they broke blocks like a creeper, so just to be safe, I'll leave it out).
Edible pies can be placed just like cakes but instead have 4 pieces; each piece restores one and a half of those little ham-hunger-symbol-things.

Jack-O-Lanterns and Golems are used very often for your information.

I don't find it a low-budget weapon until you've made yourself a decent farm...

An additional difference should be the health it gives as not all food are equal in value.

If it will not destroy terrain, it will be a block of TNT wasted.

Since you used up a ton of wheat and other food, the pie isn't as efficient as the cake. Either allow the pie to have better healing statistics or lessen the cost of the recipe.
Meat pies can only be made with steak and porkchops (which each heal 4, by the way)Each slice heals 2 hunger bars (there are four slices) and pie-bombs would destroy blocks (at least on single-player).
And I really don't see how 5 wheat+a pumpkin/meat counts as "a ton of food", taking into consideration the fact that a cake uses 4 different ingredients and I'm using 2

Whew, sorry about that, my face was just overwhelmed with awesomeness. Pies are the source of my being, and minecraft deserves a way to enter the source of my being. All of this should be put in the game, especially PIE!
Also, you should be able to put an already-made pie inside the crafting of a pie which gives you pie-flavored pie! When you try to eat it, a smaller pie explodes out the top of the pie into the sky with a "BIYEEEEEEEEW!" sound. Then you have TWO PIES!

When I make banners, people always say "THANK YOU SO MUCH OMG YOU ARE AWESOME" but never give me a +1. It makes me sad.
I agree that we should be able to make pies, and they should heal hunger.
Should throwing them do damage? Probably not. Maybe just push the object back, like snowballs.
Pie-bombs? No.
I honestly don't see how an item using 5 wheat should have the same effect as a snowball.
In response to Bigkaboom's idea (which I"m taking seriously, for some reason) IF we did include pie-flavored pie (and that's a big if), that would just be kind of broken, because you'd only use one ingredient (you said put one whole pie into another pie crust) to receive 2 pies.
I did like the idea though; it's just a shame it's not more practical.
Here's an idea completely unrelated to minecraft: put a pie-flavored pie into a pie.

I hope you like my ideas. Give me feedback!

a) favor pies
b)dislike block-breaking abilities of bomb-pies.
Compromise: Bomb-pies will only be able to break weak blocks like end stone, sandstone, dirt, gravel etc.
Thank you for your feedback! Keep it coming!
