Minecraft is a game based on survival and mining. Why not add some bigger obstacles?
An earthquake in Minecraft would be a violent event that would effect 50 chunks in a circular area.
An earthquake will result in many things:
1. If you are near the focus or epicenter of the earthquake, your screen will vibrate violently and your character will slowly get hurt.
2. When the earthquake starts, you will hear a explosion sound from the focus followed by your screen vibrating slightly and hearing loud rumble sounds.
3. When the earthquake starts, a few blocks will begin to fall. Grass, leaves, dirt, sometimes stone, sand, and gravel, and torches will fall.
4. No mobs will be able to see you, and your character cannot sprint.
5. Earthquakes can last 30 seconds to 1 minute. During this, gameplay is difficult.
6. Be careful in deserts, floating sand will immediately fall.
7. Any floating blocks will not be effected by an earthquake, making the screen stop vibrating when in the air.
8. Your character may begin to walk the same speed as of walking in soul sand.
An earthquake will be an optional in world options.

This may cause a massive amount of lag especially in poorly hosted servers and terrible PC specs.

Allow the ability to remove the screen vibrations. Some people may get nausea.
3. When the earthquake starts, a few blocks will begin to fall. Grass, leaves, dirt, sometimes stone, sand, and gravel, and torches will fall.
That would add the need to add gravity-affected entities for these blocks (Grass, leaves, dirt and stone)
4. No mobs will be able to see you, and your character cannot sprint.
I think the character should be able to sprint, with a high risk of falling down on the ground.
hmmm look I love this idea but as the post above me said it will cause lots of tech. problems
MAYBE they should add volcanoes that can "erupt" and spill lava all around, they would look cool and provide a nice and dangerous place to get lava on the surface.
a small rumble would be felt and heard before they explode.

That's my opinion for your idea. Welcome.

I DID say earthquakes would be a World Option.
