Teleportation Totems are "poles" that take the space of 3 vertical blocks. They have a special "sparkling" animation that makes them visible at night. When right-clicked on by the player, the player is "teleported" to a matching pole somewhere else on the map.
Here are the basic rules:
Teleportation totems are always paired (they are dipoles. ). The pairs are generated at world creation time.
The pairs are generated a fair distance apart.
Right-clicking on a totem instantly transports the player to the location of the paired totem.
A totem can be cut down and carried by the player to a different location.
These basic rules allow a player to travel quickly between two locations.
Now, here are some other points that extend or clarify aspects of their use:
One totem could always be positioned relatively close to the player's spawn point. This would give the player an opportunity to immediately (and easily) explore two different areas.
Totems could be placed by default near or in areas of interest (mines and villages for example). This could be a game option.
The poles could be made indestructible... or not.
A pole that is "lost" (due to the player dying and dropping the totem in a very bad place, like lava), could either stay lost, or it could be recovered. For example, the game could move the totem back to its original location (or a new random location). Or it could manufacture a "safe" area around the totem (obsidian for lava for example).
Some idea of "growing" or "cloning" totems could be introduced. For example, using an Eye of Ender on a totem (right-clicking) could cause a new pair to be generated, one end next to the poll clicked on and the other either next to the one at the other end or perhaps at a new random location.
One could restrict the location of totems to only be on obsidian. That would make their area a little safer from complete destruction.
One could restrict cutting down totems to diamond axes.
I like this idea but I think totems should be difficult to acquire. A possible solution would be to make them a drop of the enderdragon; it would drop two blocks and when you place each block it grows into a totem. Or you could have it so totems are easy to make/find, but they require an offering to become functional.
While I think this, or something similar, should be implemented into the game, I also think that totems shouldn't be easy to use or create.
By different designs I mean the portal is shaped differently. I don't really think the building block should change. Also by connecting manually I mean you need to link the portals up by (as an example) right clicking each with a certain item. The manual linking idea is something I got from a telepad plugin for bukkit where you have to right click each telepad with redstone and they become paired.
In my opinion the manual linking idea is better than different shapes/designs as you can have a uniform design but you can still have multiple portal sets.

I agree with you but I mostly green plus'd you (its now a ^?) beacus your derpy
Iron Portal -> Iron Portal
Lapis Portal -> Lapis Portal
Is that what you mean?
Maybe it could be made out of obsidian. Oh, rather then link 2 portals, have it to an alternate dimension like hyperspace, where distances are scaled down. That way traveling in hyperspace lets you move further in the overworld, and can exit at any point you want if you can find the right coordinates.
But hyper space is not minecrafty though. I know, remember Doom where portals took you hell? That way you can fight demons and stuff, But we can't call it hell though... that might send the relgious and aethest guys in to a flurry....
But what to call it........

Perhaps with different designs so you can make multiple ones. Or a way of connecting them manually.
