This probably won't be even close to the possibility of implementation until the game gets further along;
here we go. FREEZING METER
===================
This meter only appears under the circumstances that you are cold. Like the Air Meter.
What this does, like the Air meter it counts down. Once it reaches zero you slowly start to take damage.
Representation could be Fire icon, which changes to a comical 'frozen' fire icon.
You could slow down the cooling of your body through warm furs and going into caves/houses and stop the process altogether by building a fire.
Now implementation of this requires another thing.
WINTER
===========
Ahhh, the nice cold white winters of Minecraftia. White snow falls from the crisp air. The entire landscape covered
in a blanc blanket that blinds the eyes. Ice covers all water, except that which comes from the ocean. (Salt water!)
Trees lose their leaves and you cannot receive seeds from them. Twiggy blocks instead of leaves cover the trees.
Animals hibernate. Any plants that aren't under some sort of cover are destroyed and gathering of seeds is impossible. A minor idea for winter: A long and arduous process allows you to construct Pykrete material, which is strong, quite close to concrete in strength and as an added bonus, is less dense than water. Here's the interesting bit: It is stronger in winter than in warmer seasons. Not to mention: You will freeze in this weather rather quickly unless you are near a fire or wearing proper clothing. (I.E. Iron Plate armor doesn't cut it. Chilled Zombie meat in a can anyone?) Now to balance out the hardships of winter, unless Notch wants it this hard, creatures will move slightly slower than they did in the warmer months. You could say they got chilled to the bone? :roll:
This could lead to scenarios/themes like 'You must collect enough things to make a safe hollow before X number of days or you will freeze to death'.
That is to say, the only requirement to survive winter is a campfire. To do anything in winter though, would require either a close position to resources or the clothes. Parkas and furry boots, people! You'll catch your death out there!

(Sorry for double post but)
I think I figured out a way to counter-act lag!
Instead of the snow all coming in at once and boom, one day it's winter,
It should be like this:
Snow slowly starts falling one day and you see little patches of snow around.
Days later there's more snow around and you need to start wearing warm clothes.
One day the entire land will be covered with snow and ice and things.
Then day by day it slowly dissipates.
Then you get x days of no winter.
So basically if you slow down the process at which snow and ice is generated, that should theoretically disperse the lag, right?

So it's like a slower day/night cycle. That would theoretically be relatively un-laggy. Like if night didn't have to update so many blocks' lighting conditions at once.
Yeaaah, Hell maps should get like a "AMG THE MONSTERS ARE REVOLTING" Season instead of winter, as it is indeed Hell. Perhaps for Hell instead of winter, ash piles appear instead of snow?
I really do like the forest idea!
