I was playing in creative mode when I started to think what if we could have blocks that turn/rotate based on a set speed/velocity. They would also turn everything attached to them if items attached are not too heavy or not the entire map obviously.. I was thinking back to a simple game called incredibots ( http://incredibots2.com/ ) where you can do just that where the rotating block would be just like the rotating point in that game.. seems pretty simple to me but I do not write games just a suggestion Notch maybe for later concideration.
We've- it's kind of a long story about incredibots.
Right now it seems kind of outlandish; there aren't a lot of entities that allow for this kind of speed/velocity whoozer. And there isn't a lot of space in minecraft maps to use turny dealios- sure, doors and stuff, but that's not a necessity and cars are out of the question because there are no slopes.
The idea was to have something like this ( a floating tower that Z3R0faith made) rotate on its axis at a slow interval would be pretty cool I think. I know that cars and stuff would not work but stuff like this seems pretty possible screen below
(to reply to the incredibots thing I concur FFFFFFFFF that game)
the code that lets you have such huge maps with such great depth and variety, probably also prevents the implimentation of rotating blocks.
from my understanding of the block engine, the type of block at any given xyz position is probably just an enumerated type (a number representing a block type) and everything else (lighting, collisions, adding/removing blocks) just reads/writes to this data structure.
for this reason, doing a rotation / physics calculation on even a single block would require that that block was completely seperate from the rest of the map, and therefore would only be able to interact with anything if almost all of the code were re-written to account for the 2nd type of block in this game world.
This suggestion will not happen unless Notch decides it'd be a great idea to totally change how he handles things.

splad = correct.
It'd be like trying to rotate one part of an ice cube tray.
I could write more, but I won't. This isn't going to happen. Its impossibility is not due to the fact that it would be unthematic or not useful -- but simply because the system is not at all built for this sort of thing.
A rotating door as an entity might work. A rotator block to move things like that tower would not work, ever.

Aside, we completely understand that this more than likely is not feasible at this time. splad seems to explain best the reasons why this isn't feasible, but again, this is merely a suggestion, not a demand of "instant change or gtfo :tnt:."
It's not that the idea isn't feasible at this time.
It's that this idea will never be feasible in Minecraft.
(Without a ridiculously huge rewrite of how the system functions at its core, which will not happen for something like this.)
And I pruned the quote because it doesn't change what he's saying. I read the whole thing, and I figured I might as well quote the most concise thing that I could to show what I was responding to.

Very true. The thing I think most non-programmers do not realize is that when you see a block, you think "there is a block there that has location x,y,z", but actually, how the program sees it is "location x,y,z is occupied by a block of number n". Because of this, spinning even one block would be difficult to implement, and would probably not be nearly worth it. Rotating an entire structure would require that the blocks be located partially across lines, which would make absolutely no sense to the computer. Hope this helps.

Thank you Phoenyx, that is the kind of response I was looking for ( something civil ) I was just suggesting an idea not trying to get "flamed" by immature users who try to break an idea down because they dont like it...
In all, I "hope" to see something like this eventually in Minecraft, maybe in Beta or even when fully finished. Just seems like a good idea.
I am done with this discussion, thank you all who have been helpful and to the "flamers"..... **** your mother!
I should let you know, diamond, that I have nothing against the concept of the idea. I mentioned earlier "Its impossibility is not due to the fact that it would be unthematic or not useful", but left out my personal opinion on the matter. The technical limitations are what prevents this idea from being seriously considered by anyone aware of how things work internally.
It is clear to me now that, since you still hold hopes that this kind of feature might eventually show up, you haven't really been listening to everyone explaining how much of a royal pain this would be for Notch to implement.

The red brick at the base is where we were thinking it could look cool if it pivoted...
1) What, WHAT is the point? If you need to rotate for a specific game you can walk or use the mouse to look a different direction.
2) Laggggfest. you could rotate the whole map if you did it right, leading to instant game crash.
3) seems like it would only produce things in a futuristic setting, and would cause minecraft's feel to be thrown off quite a bit.
Windmills.
