Why not add a backpack that can be crafted and then placed in one space in your inventory for additional space say for, arrows maybe. This could be crafted using a combination of leather and to add color certain dies. This might improve your time you could be in the mine. Thank you for reading.
Also, I think it would be cool to add a backpack as an item, but only allow it to carry items in it, and only a total of 64 all together, within 27 spaces. Meaning you won't have that random bone, string, or flower cluttering up your inventory. You could wear it as a chest armor piece (the more full it is, the more sprinting, walking, and jumping cause fatigue) to save even more inventory space, and you would access the backpack via right clicking while holding it, which would bring up the small chest GUI but it says "backpack" at the top.
You can place backpacks in chests. But like I said, they can hold a max of 64 blocks divided among 27 spaces (small chest size), but only items, NOT BLOCKS. This would would allow stacking unstackables, but not so much it will be heavily abused, as you would get only 27 spaces, and the backpack needs to be in your hotbar to access like a chest.

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."
