I had a cat get stuck under one and drown. I live in an area with a lot of swamp biome and the area of lily pads extends well offshore into the ocean, and I've wrecked a few boats on them. Yet, hit them on purpose, and they flip and sink like...lily pads.
It's ridiculous for them to be rigidly durable to the point of wrecking a boat, yet soft enough to sink with a punch.
Please make them break into a drop on collision. If you can make torches uproot when touched by water, and vines detach on contact with water, please just make it so that contact with a boat makes them drop as an item and sink.
There are so few ways to make Minecraft more realistic, but when was the last time you heard of someone wrecking their canoe on a water plant?
Yes, it does seem very unrealistic to me that they break the boats. I'd like it especially it the boat were unable to collide with them, and could simply pass through, as though it were temporarily pushing them underwater.
However, I do like being able to stand on them/get trapped under them. I recently visited a large garden/museum in Missouri or Illinois, I can't remember which. At any rate, there were very large lily pads in one section of the museum, and visitors were allowed to stand on them. I'm a tall guy, about 6'1", and the lily pad supported me without any apparent strain.

He who lives in a water house should not throw sponges.
