Elevator would be good to replace water elevators.
You'd have to make shafts (6 iron + redstone?) and a car (8 iron + redstone + string?). You place the shafts on top of each other. Then you put the car in the shaft by right clicking. Right click to get into car, w to go up, s to go down, and right click to hop out.
The shafts would work like rail but vertical.
The cars work like mine carts, you can retrieve them like mine carts. You can hop in or out anywhere on the shaft. You jump out the same direction you placed car from.
Elevators move faster than a cart on powered rail.
I don't think it will be good. Elevators are too technologic for Minecraft. It's not like you being on the wilderness can make super advanced stuff in a matter of days.
I've been pushing for some sort of lift that resemble track but with different physics.
It needs rail that is a cross between ladders and track.
Can be wood (slow) or iron(fast).
The car needs to be 2 high so Steve's big noggin can fit.
The rail design would require string with wood or redstone with iron.
All rail segments are the same and powered with a car or can be climbed (so you can lay the track or for manual climbing).

An even better elevator idea would be that you can place rails on verticle surfaces.
You would also need powered rails minimum of 4 blocks apart to get you up in a minecraft.

How about ladder + rail = shaft? maybe redstone to.
The car doesn't need to be 2 high; it could have no roof. (like mine cart)

Climbable shafts is a good idea.
How about:

I don't really like this idea. I just build it out of redstone and pistons. There are plenty of great designs.
An elevator would be easier to build and more efficient as a lift imo.
